youtube logo New YouTube FeaturesYou may have already heard about the new upgrades added to YouTube.  If you have a channel and you publish videos for your artists, you can embed direct links to Amazon or iTunes music stores within the video. This drives fans to a legal source for purchasing the audio behind the video they’ve been enjoying.  I’m assuming YouTube/Google will generate revenue through affiliate programs.

Watch an example here.

It seems that there is opportunity here for artists and labels to brand their YouTube sites as their own, leading to an improved artist to fan connection, while also monetizing catalog. I’m curious if buying direct from a band’s YouTube channel can be viewed as the digital equivalent of buying a record at a show, while shopping on iTunes may be akin to buying a CD at Best Buy.  A more direct fan to band connection. Will people perceive this as supporting the artist directly?

Hopefully this new feature will result in a revenue boost for labels. We will be tracking this in the weeks to come so stay tuned for updates!
