Check out OregonLive for a great piece on gypsy pop queen, Y La Bamba. It gives some great insight to where the artist comes from and what inspires her music:
“Two years ago, Luz Elena Mendoza was in a haze. As a result of giardia and amebic dysentery she picked up on a trip to India, she was bedridden for months, followed by chronic exhaustion and pain. During this time, she’d scribble lyrics or pick up her electric guitar — left over from her days in Ashland rock outfit Romance Forgery — and play a new melody and put it down. The music she found herself playing recalled large gatherings of Latino families she attended growing up in southern Oregon. The album is beautiful and otherworldly. The pseudo-classical guitar melody of “Isla de Hierva Buena” is hypnotic and blurry, laced with string buzz and discord. The song’s refrain of “Aye Dios” (“Oh, God”) is always followed by the nonsensical “datadata.” The aesthetic is both mythical and post-modern, like an Alejandro Jodorowsky film.”
