Back after a seven year hiatus, Buenos Aires’s acclaimed Latin-rock outfit, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, have reassembled to release the highly anticipated La Luz del Ritmo (The Light of Rhythm). As one of the most influential and most-referenced rock band of the Latin rock world, Los Cadillacs have collaborated with music greats such as Mick Jones (The Clash), Debbie Harry, Celia Cruz, Rubén Blades and Fishbone, as well as earning a spot on the soundtracks for Grosse Pointe Blank and The Matador. Los Cadillacs have received much critical acclaim, winning the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album, and a nomination in the 2000 Latin Grammy Awards for Best Band and Best Music Video (“La Vida”) which received the International Viewer’s Choice Award at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards (they have performed on MTV’s Unplugged series). A mix of rock, ska, salsa, reggae, folk, and funk, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs have taken musical genres that has been traditionally limited to an English-speaking market and seamlessly applied them to the Latin world. Heralded as one of the godfather groups of the Latin Alternative/Latin Rock genre, they are multiplatinum throughout Latin America and widely loved.
Their new release reveals how Los Cadillacs took their diverse influence and managed to assemble them all together without making the result feel forced. The eagerly awaited disk includes five new songs, six re-makes, and two covers, all of which are played in new arrangements. A fun and upbeat album, La Luz del Ritmo has plenty of ways to make you move: ska based songs such as “Flores” and “Nostros Edoistas” make you jump and dance while “Malbicho” is a soild-gold funk number (with turn-table scratching!). Los Cadillacs even manage to include a wonderful folk ballad, “Hoy” which could easily be played alongside a Johnny Cash tune. Rock n’ Roll legend Mick Jones lends the guys his Clash anthem, “Should I Stay or Should I Go” which translates wonderfully and is further enhanced by the horn section. La Luz del Ritmo was recently released in Mexico and Argentina and quickly declared Platinum in both countries. Los Fabulosos Cadillacs are touring the States in April and are definitely worth seeing.
