Originally released back on May 2nd (P-Vine Records) in Japan, rap fans have been eager for CYNE’s American release of their new record Water For Mars (8/11, Hometapes). Those who can’t wait til August can download the album now on iTunes exclusive pre-release. The blog love has been widespread since this album’s Japan release and some underground rap bloggers already have it on their best of 2009 list.
Sir Alistair of Potholes In My Blog had this praise for Water For Mars: “Cultivating Your New Experience, better known as CYNE, has found their niche within the underground rap community. They understand what works well for them musically, and they do it. 2009’s Water For Mars, is a remarkably strong album, likely their best effort yet.”
Though press for their last LP Pretty Dark Things was somewhat mixed it’s clear Water For Mars is receiving rave reviews all around. Deservedly so as it’s clear this record was carefully crafted and masterfully executed. Speck of CYNE describes that process and illuminates what makes this record so appealing:
“The songs on this record were created over the span of about 4 or 5 years (roughly 2004 – 2009), though every track was revisited, mixed, and mastered in 2009. The record displays the full spectrum of the “CYNE sound,” including the growth of the band, our collective tastes, and the process of our songwriting. It starts on a positive note about moving forward, building community, and taking on personal responsibility (these are themes that resonate throughout the record). At times, the record grows into something very ethereal and cosmic, alongside a contrast of something that hits harder, musically and lyrically. With each subsequent ‘movement’ we see a blend of introspective thought, social commentary, and a sound weighted in a more classic, uplifting tradition. This album constantly sways back and forth between the lines of classic hip hop, textural music, and a progressive selection of words and sound — and, to me, this defines CYNE.”
