On July 10, the sad news broke that Jamaican musician Sugar Minott had passed away. The 54 year old helped create the sensation of dancehall reggae, and his unexpected death is a tragedy. You may know him by his hit cover of Michael Jackson’s “Good Thing Going,” which reached number 4 in the UK in 1981, or perhaps by “Hard Time Pressure” and “River Jordan” which were powerhouses on the UK reggae charts. Sugar Minott created his revolutionary style by laying his vocals over original 1960s backing bands instead of using a live band. He formed his own record label, Black Roots, and ran a Youth Promotion project dedicated to helping young musicians. On top of this he ran the Youthman Promotion sound-system that allowed young singers to gain exposure. Throughout his career, he released over 60 albums to continuously positive reviews. His signature reggae sound will continue to thrive thanks to his outstanding contributions to the music world. To learn more about Minott’s life and career, read his full obituary here.
