I didn’t want to write ‘beats,’” says Gold Panda, “I didn’t want bangers. I wanted songs with structure.” And yet, despite Gold Panda’s protests to the contrary, Lucky Shiner is full of bangers, of a certain persuasion. The two years Panda spent studying Japanese culture, language, and history at the School of Oriental and Asian studies in Japan also find their way into the music. On Lucky Shiner, vinyl-static rhythms and heart-on-sleeve melancholia combine, and the results are breathtaking. Lucky Shiner was mixed by Simian Mobile Disco’s James Shaw and recorded in two sessions in a shady retreat in the English countryside—Gold Panda’s aunt and uncle’s Essex home.

Frankie Rose has a reputation around here. And by here, we mean Brooklyn. And by reputation, we mean her minimal, Maureen Tucker-like beats and iconic presence in such buzz-stirring bands as Crystal Stilts, Dum Dum Girls, and Vivian Girls.
