Paint It Black: An Alt-Country Tribute To The Rolling Stones, named after the band’s 1966 number-one hit, pays homage to the group’s tremendous contribution in paving the way for today’s Alternative Country music. During the 60s and 70s The Rolling Stones were already making groundbreaking music that took the world by storm. It was the beginning of an era that would forever change American music, echoing throughout history and trickling down from generation to generation making a lasting impact on much of the music found today.
Gram Parsons, singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist and friend of the Stones, is widely considered to be the godfather of Alternative Country music. Well known for his work within the Country genre, Parsons also liked to play blues, folk, and rock music. His music was too Rock n’ Roll to be Country and too Country to be Rock, becoming what he coined as “Cosmic American Music.” In the late 60s early 70s Parsons joined The Rolling Stones on their UK tour hoping to get signed to their recently-established label. Although the few years that followed would prove to be difficult ones for Parsons, ending tragically when the talented songwriter fatally overdosed in 1973, his influence on The Rolling Stones is evident in much of their music that was written during and after this period.
This compilation gives us a chance to hear some of the bands greatest hits as well as some of their lesser known songs “reimagined” and re-conceptualized by several up-and-coming stars in the Alt-Country genre, including Cowboy Junkies, Great Lake Swimmers and Everest. Whether you’re a Rolling Stones fan or a Country buff, Paint It Black is an excellent token of appreciation to the band and one worth listening to.
