Title: What It Means To Be Left-Handed
Label: Fat Cat Records

Release Date: 09.14.10

Part children’s cartoon, part career retrospective, What It Means To Be Left-Handed is the first Mice Parade album to be released in the band’s second decade of existence. Diverging from the pop sensibilities of Mice Parade’s most recent successes – Bem-Vinda Vontade and Mice Parade – it is a fresh adventure, all over the map and awash in color; splashes of West-African Highlife mingle with Flamenco, Brazilian Jazz, and the late ‘80s indie rock that band founder Adam Pierce was stuck on in high school.

In typical Mice Parade fashion, What It Means To Be Left-Handed cuts a wide stylistic swath, but Pierce’s trademark stormy, intricate percussion, as well as melodic interweaving and warm, resonant vocal treatments carry throughout, stitching the pieces into a coherent whole.

While Pierce plays and sings the bulk of this latest effort, he summoned members of his globally-scattered touring outfit to bring their voices and instruments to the table: among the ranks are vocalist Caroline Lufkin (who also records for Temporary Residence Ltd. as a solo artist), classical guitarist Dan Lippel, and megadrummer Doug Scharin (HiM, Codeine, Rex, Enablers). In addition to his bandmates, Pierce allies himself here with a range of guest musicians: Swahili vocalist Somi (album opener “Kupanda”), Meredith Godreau of FatCat’s Gregory & The Hawk (“Do Your Eyes See Sparks”), and members of the Japanese band Clammbon (“Tokyo Late Night”).

From the first, What It Means To Be Left-Handed showcases the intricate sonics, joyful audio experimentation, and expansive worldview that make Mice Parade one of the most compelling ensembles of our time. Mice Parade will be touring the US this fall so keep an eye out. In the meantime, give this promotrack a listen:

Just Encoded: Y La Bamba

ylabamba Just Encoded: Y La Bamba

(c) Alicia J. Rose

Artist: Y La Bamba
Title: Lupon
Label: Tender Loving Empire
Genre: Indie : Roots
UPC: 751937386629
Territory: Worldwide
Release Date: 09.28.10

With Y La Bamba, Luzelena Mendoza draws from both her strict Catholic upbringing as an only daughter of a Mexican immigrant and a debilitating illness that led her to fall away from her faith, to create what LA Weekly calls “Devendra Banhart-influenced art-folk with hazy femme vocals and traditional Mexican sounds.”

Luzelena grew up spending her summers on a farm in California’s San Joaquin Valley. It was in these strong Mexican communities that she would soak up the melodies and the stories that were being told while, as she remembers it, “the men with tassel hats” strummed their guitars and sang their traditional folk songs in three part harmonies.

With a raw songbook of home recordings under her belt and a new group of musicians to help Mendoza with her musical vision, Y La Bamba began to captivate audiences. Eventually, Y La Bamba would attract the attention of The Decemberists guitarist, Chris Funk, who offered his production skills for the band’s first studio recording. Funk worked tirelessly to capture Y La Bamba’s rustic tones, songs inspired by the traditional tunes of Mendoza’s childhood, and her signature vocals that resemble the sounds spilling out of a 1930’s Victrola. Dubbing the confidently stunning body of songs Lupon (after a nickname that Mendoza’s father despised), Y La Bamba has emerged from the studio, ready to wow listeners everywhere. Lupon is an album ripe with sweeping, symphonic, complex yet airy female led indie-art-folk rock with breathtaking harmonies and some traditional Mexican flare.

For a preview of Lupon and to hear Luzelena’s signature voice, check out “Juniper,” the beautifully haunting song that was also featured by Spinner (and countless others!) as a free download.

From the tripwire: “Opening line My temple has been compromised/ I was meant to rise/ six feet above my bed takes on a heavy meaning when you know Y La Bamba singer Luz Elena was inspired by a loss of her Mexican Catholic faith after becoming incredibly ill. Can’t help but think of Frida Kahlo, who poured her own sick-frustration into a similar vein of haunting, surreal art, reflecting the overwhelming desire to escape the confines of one’s own physicality. And speaking of rising, Elena’s voice floats like some kind of cirrus cloud over the oceanic psych-folk tones on “Juniper,” where religious imagery weighs heavy on her psyche but can’t keep her spirit down. The Portland native’s forthcoming, gorgeous full-length, Lupon (produced by The Decemberists’ Chris Funk and out September 28 on Tender Loving Empire), completes the song cycle, offering personal deliverance where the church could not.”

Chilling. Stirring. Powerful. Contemplative. These are some of the words most frequently used to describe the achingly beautiful piano instrumentals of Carly Comando. Her debut album One Take features ten delicately woven songs (including her single, “Everday”) that are the direct emotional output of her innermost thoughts. “The album means the world to me. It’s complete, in-the-moment sincerity translated into moody solo piano music. I used an improv technique, recording in just one take, so I could capture the essence of pure emotion” says Carly. From the rises and falls to the shrinks and swells, these songs will leave an indelible impression on your mind. It’s music that stays with you forever.

Carly’s well known piano ballad “Everyday” is the score to viral video “Noah Takes a Photo of Himself Every Day For 6 Years” which has been viewed 16,000,000 times on YouTube alone. The video features a rapid fire sequence of nearly 2,400 photos of Noah Kalina, who took a picture of himself in an identical pose every single day for 6 years. It has been featured on CBS News, Good Morning America, VH1′s 40 Greatest Internet Superstars and was spoofed on The Simpsons’ episode “Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind.” Carly was honored by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences with a Primetime Emmy Award for her musical contribution to The Simpsons episode.

Here’s the famous video:

“Everyday” currently serves as the score to Amnesty International’s “Death to the Death Penalty” ad campaign and has also been used in the NBA’s “Where Amazing Happens”

Rising out of South Carolina, Graves of Valor brings some of the finest American death metal I’ve heard from a new band in quite a while. Relapse doesn’t play around when it comes to quality metal and this is certainly no exception. I will admit I was a bit hesitant when I read that three members were formerly in Through the Eyes of the Dead, but my fears were put rapidly to rest. I’m sure that some will attempt to throw this into the metalcore camp, but I’m not falling for it. This is pure death metal; the kind that used to crawl out of Floridian swamps.

Thankfully, there is nary a clean vocal to be found on the album. No sing-a-long chorus, no tender verses. Growls and screams prevail throughout, but the real highlight is the instrumentation. And man can these lads shred. The dual technical guitar attack is tight, concise and even has space for the occasional face-melting solo. Don’t believe me? Check out the sweep bonanza on “Locusta.” The dual leads pair quite nicely with the double bass assault of Dayton Cantley.

Its not all about brutality however. On Salarian Gate there is plenty of melody hidden underneath the chaos. Towards the end of the album, we find a nice bit of contrast as the grind/pit tuner “The Clever Ape” blends into the acoustic interlude “Diderot,” before bleeding into the technical wizardry of “Locusta.” Relapse was awesome enough to let us pre-release “Locusta” to the masses. Listen to it here and grab it to go above.

Don’t miss Graves of Valor this summer, on tour with German technical death wizards Obscura and grind legends Brutal Truth. The Relapse contamination tour is coming to a town near you and you can’t hide.

This is the wondrous debut record from Clues. We just got it into our system and are really excited to share two PromoTracks well before release date!  Co-founders Alden Penner and Brendan Reed have been quietly nurturing this project in Montreal since the demise of their respective bands, Unicorns and Les Angles Morts.  As a member of the short-lived Unicorns, Penner’s songwriting prowess was unveiled in a bright burst of mysterious and kaleidoscopic energy, in the form of a single full-length album (released in 2003) and countless live shows, both of which rallied passionate responses from audiences and critics alike.

By: Michael Madavi

Filastine’s new album, Dirty Bomb is a gritty combination of urban rhythm with the sounds of modern conflict. The album’s title says it all: thick, tribal hip-hop beats provide a soundtrack to the chaos of a battlefield in any part of the world. Grey Filastine, the mastermind behind the project, is no stranger to the ways of industrial and urban thunder; his previous work in ¡Tchkung! was notorious for its use of indigenous instruments blended with multiple drummers that spawned  unique and powerful live shows that occasionally ended in police raids, riots (particularly Seattle’s Bumbershoot Festival in 1994,[1]) and impromptu street parades. His new work is not inapplicable to the same conditions of dissent, but it could just as easily fuel the anger of a powerful rebellion and bang in an intense warehouse show. Utilizing political sound clips and featuring very talented MC’s from all over world (Rabah, Wire MC), Filastine  has created a fantastic album that is sure to please anyone looking for something to inspire or bang. The live show is sure to please: catch Filastine on his US tour beginning in March 14.
