Baths is really 21-year-old L.A. music-maker, Will Wiesenfeld. Over the last six years, under the handle of [Post-Foetus], Wiesenfeld has gainfully explored the intersections and outer reaches of both electronic and acoustic music. With Baths, his eclecticism finds its greatest focus yet, in a hail of lush melodies, ghostly choirs, playful instrumentation and stuttering beats. Cerulean is the auspicious debut of L.A.’s Baths. Evolving out of Will Wiesenfeld’s varied [Post-Foetus] project, and inspired by the energy of the L.A.’s burgeoning beat scene, the record represents a clear departure from both – an often warm, acoustic-fueled electronic music that hews closer to the work of contemporaries like Toro Y Moi. By combining songwriting with self-sampling, raw musicianship with synthesized textures, and field recordings with propulsive beats, Baths has created a seething sound-cloud packed with bright moments and prone to unexpected turns. Here are Baths tour dates:

Tender Trap started in 2001 with Amelia Fletcher and Rob Pursey and a small 8 track machine. John Stanley (aka DJ Downfall) joined the band to help create rhythm tracks and play the bass. After a prolonged hiatus, Tender Trap are back with two brand new band members: Katrina Dixon (ex Police Cat, Sally Skull) on drums and vocals and Elizabeth Darling (‘Allo Darlin’) on keyboards, guitar and vocals. Dansette Dansette combines the harmonies, oohs, ahs and sha-la-las of classic girl-pop with the stripped down beats and dirty guitars of the Shop Assistants and The Vaselines. Tender Trap has a July tour through the UK:

The Bay Area quartet The Stone Foxes is made up of brothers Shannon and Spence Koehler, Aaron Mort, and Avi Vincour. Bears & Bulls is their second album, and it’s full of great song writing, warm guitars, a nut-tight rhythm section, and occasional blues harp riffs. The band is influenced by the greats of the late 60s and early 70s like The Band, Bob Dylan, and Led Zeppelin, but it’s the way they create and record their music that sets them apart. Huge fans of playing live, The Stone Foxes develop their music onstage over a period of time. To record Bears & Bulls, the band built their own studio and recorded it with almost no overdubs to keep that live energy flowing. Starting in July, they’ll be embarking on a West coast tour:

Review: Mother Hips Pacific DustAsk yourself this: when’s the last time you heard a band that was good simply because they’re a great group of musicians who work well together and thus yield awesome, likable songs with sincerity? Just when you thought there were no bands left who don’t have some sort of an angle or gimmick to lure you in, you stumble upon The Mother Hips, a San Francisco group based in folk-rock, but hardly restricted to country pleasantries. This is a good ol’ fashion rock band with nothing to hide and no distractions to spruce up their tunes: here’s what American music is truly all about. Their newest release, Pacific Dust (on Camera Records, who boast awesome artists like Ben Kweller and The Bees), is a mighty mixture of electric country rock, psychadelia, indie pop sensibilities, vocal harmonies, road-educated lyricism, and acoustic comfort. Basically, all the same ingredients that have built The Mother Hips’ reputation as one of the most respected and critically acclaimed veteran Bay Area acts have only refined with time.

The Hips formed in 1991 at Chico State when the original lineup ended up living together and playing a variety of smaller gigs and parties under various monikers (even occasionally acting as the backing band for a Led Zeppelin cover band called the Keystones). After committing to creating a solid rock band, members Tim Bluhm (Vocals/Guitar), Greg Loiacono (Guitar/Vocals), Issac Parsons (Bass) and Mike Wofchuck (Drums) formed The Hips and made the jump from parties to local Sacramento gigs at places like LaSalles and Juanitas. Slowly but surely the group’s songwriting talent began to emerge as their original material replaced cover songs, culminating in their debut release Back to the Grotto in 1993. The record was produced by the band and a mutual friend Paul Hoaglin, who would later fill in for Parsons on Bass after his departure. The record was recognized and respected, as various labels began to court the group for a contract. In the end, it was production heavy hitter Rick Rubin who signed the Hips to his American Recordings label (ousting MCA) at the encouragement of The Black Crowes’ frontman, Chris Robinson. Not bad for a group of guys who hadn’t even finished their time at Chico state, huh?

With the re-release of Grotto and it’s follow up Shootout in early 1996, along with subsequent touring, the band gained a solid fan base and managed to book much larger venues including the legendary Fillmore West. Despite these successes, American Recordings eventually dropped the group after failing to properly promote them (a lengthy legal battle with Warner Brothers Records was soon to come and the label would fold), leading the group to reevaluate their direction. Shifting to shorter, more radio-friendly songs that were stripped down to the basics of songwriting and replacing their drummer with John Hofer (The Freewheelers), the band made the move in 1997 to the Bay from up north and have remained loyal since. They recorded two more albums and eventually picked up Hoaglin on bass, spreading their sound and amassing a cult following in the area. However, the pressures of touring and the life of the road took a toll on the group with a couple of members requesting time off. Their subsequent hiatus from 2003 till late 2004 produced various side projects and even three separate documentaries on the group.

Rested and reunited, the Mother Hips are back in action and hot off the success garnered from their 2007 LP Kiss the Crystal Flake. Their songs “Time We Had,” “Red Tandy,” and “Time Sick Son of a Grizzly Bear” were featured on the wildly popular music video game Rock Band. After more successful touring, the band is better than ever and prepared to release Pacific Dust, their strongest work yet. Their 18+ years as a group have proved not only are the Hips survivors, but also fantastic musicians. They strike a perfect balance between Americana story telling and impassioned, gritty rock (as the New Yorker puts it, they “sing it sweet and play it dirty”). From the thundering Fuzz-rock opener “White Falcon Fuzz” to the intimate ballad “Young Charles Ives,” the Hips tell the story of many truly hardworking and humble American rock bands. With bittersweet melodies, poignant lyrics, and strong, mighty musicianship, The Mother Hips are as good as ever. Pick up Pacific Dust and join the thousands who’ve come to realize the talent this group boasts!

Review: The Mumlers- “Don’t Throw Me Away”

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

274488 721 Review: The Mumlers Dont Throw Me Away
Artist: The Mumlers
Title: Don’t Throw Me Away
Label: Galaxia
Genre: Indie : Alternative
UPC: 702932003424
Territory: World ex- Japan
Release Date: 9.29.09

Time to show some local love! San Jose’s latest and greatest the Mumlers have just released a fantastic new sophomore album entitled Don’t Throw Me Away on Galaxia Records (Ray Barbee, Her Space Holiday). A blend of storytelling folk numbers and indie rock goodness, decorated with a vast array of instrumentations, the seven-piece has created a sound all their own. The band was founded by singer/songwriter Will Sprott who amassed the other players intending for them to guest on various tracks but instead discovering the group has a unique dynamic that took off and created something totally unique. Implementing a wide range of instruments including French horns, guitars electric and acoustic, uptight bass, keys, trumpets, pedals steel, and various percussionary accents, the group could be better described as a musical troupe rather than a band.

Their sound is somewhere between a drunken Tom Waits ballad and an alt-country western facing number to keep them motivated on long travels. Sprott’s voice is definitely a defining part of the music, he howls and gnarls his way through swaying, dusty numbers, guiding you through a mess of different instruments (sort of like if the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach had one too many and wandered home singing lonely ballads). The music isn’t all swaying and pining; there’s a lot of quality musicianship to be praised. Combining subtle elements of blues, folk, Americana, and even jazz with that Tom Waits swagger, the Mumlers have blended these ingredients to make something their own. They’re known for having great live shows filled with instrument swapping, spontaneous dancing, and passionate playing. They sound very aged and almost “vintage” for such a fresh band, lending testimony to their skill that has made them one of Northern California’s rising groups.

Be sure to pick up Don’t Throw Me Away for a feeling well-worn in musicianship and fresh talent.

“Possibly one of Canada’s freshest offspring of the love triangle between funk, soul, and hiphop, rapper/producer Mantis is the essence of urban music personified.” -from Mantis Myspace

Highly melodic beats bump as Mantis deftly spits his intelligent yet accessible lyrics with the skill of a seasoned veteran. From the opening bars of Still Life it’s clear there’s a new force in Hip Hop coming to us from north of the border.

“Born on the 16th of September 1984, Mantis embodies the love of music passed down to him from his father, a guitarist in a local blues outfit and organizer of many celebrated jazz, blues, and funk festivals in the Southern-Ontario city of Kitchener/Waterloo. First picking up the drumsticks, then the microphone, then finally mastering the art of music production at the Trebas Institute in Toronto, Mantis represents the finest in hiphop culture in all that he creates.” -from Mantis Myspace

Having already produced tracks for the likes of JD Era, Shad K and Point Blank, Mantis is no newcomer to the up and coming Canadian hip hop scene. His track “I Don’t Like To” was the lead single to Shad K’s 2008 Juno Award nominated album – The Old Prince. With guest appearances on Still Life supplied by Rufus John, Justis, Hajah Bug and others there’s no doubt that Mantis in the middle of the freshest hip hop coming out of Canada today. Unfortunately for Mantis and his collaborators, Canadian hip hop still faces a huge challenge when breaking into the American market. Only a few Canadian hip hop artists such as Kardinal Offishaal have achieved any success in America.

Though firmly rooted in the present Mantis sound is more mid-90′s new school than current day. His combination of live instrumentation, soulful samples and melodic flow fit more closely with The Roots than Lil’ Wayne. His Lyrics are thoughtful and well crafted without becoming overly wordy. Mantis is clearly steeped in hip hop history and has an amazing sense for blending the past and present. Likewise he carefully toes the line between indie and mainstream referencing and even partially quoting Jay-Z while also sampling Common. From the classic soul samples of “You Don’t Know” to the musical layering on “Bounce Back” Mantis displays production talent to match the best in the industry. Combine this with his cool melodic flow and you have the best up and coming rapper/producer since Kanye West.

Mantis has already opened up for Canadian hip hop’s biggest star Kardinal Offishaal as well as the K-Os, Jeru the Damaja, and CL Smooth. His talent is undeniable and his craft is clearly honed and ready. The question is whether or not the hip hop world is ready for Mantis. The answer is yet to be determined, but one thing is clear: It is time for American hip hop fans to look to the north and embrace our Canadian neighbors.

priority update big Three 6 Mafia’s Juicy J and DJ Paul Go Solo

By: Reggie Singh

Juicy J and DJ Paul from the Academy-Award winning and 2009 BET award nominee rap group, Three 6 Mafia, release their solo albums.  With 4 gold and platinum albums already under their belt Hustle Till I Die and Scale-A-Ton should follow a similar path. Since their debut in the mid-90′s they have experienced a number of changes in their line-up, but ultimately it came down Juicy J and DJ Paul.  Their “get buck” style of rap is a spin-off of the ever popular “Crunk” and tends to focus on the club scene.  Even though the two have traditionally worked together for some time, they’re now embarking on their own solo careers.  While these are separate albums there is still a similarity due in part to their constant collaborations. Nonetheless, these albums will appeal to any true Three 6 Mafia fans.

Even with a release date for June 2nd the single, “30 Inches” featuring Gucci Mane and Project Pat, has already been receiving radio play and the preview for the song on YouTube has been streamed over 50,000 in a very short period. This track is going to see many remixes in the near future, and who knows maybe a chopped and screwed version as well. “North Memphis Like Me (feat. V Slash)” is another stand out track that builds up to a heavy hitting bass line. V Slash brings a contrast to the track that can only be described as the epitome of the Dirty South.  Juicy J has always represented Memphis, Tennessee and this album is no exception.

“Tremé” and Kermit Ruffins Get the Greenlight from HBO

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

priority update big Tremé and Kermit Ruffins Get the Greenlight from HBO

KermitTremŽArtist: Kermit Ruffins
Title: Livin’ A Tremé Life
Label: Basin Street
Genre: Jazz
Release Date: 4/28/09
UPC: 652905010723
Territory: World

Incredible jazz trumpeter, vocalist, composer, and IODA-distributed artist Kermit Ruffins is now set to star in HBO’s new series, “Tremé,” a drama series set against the unique New Orleans backdrop of second-line parades, brass bands and Mardi Gras Indians. Besides highlighting Ruffins as an artist, the show will bring with it tens of millions of dollars in spending, dozens of jobs and national exposure for the city’s music and culture as it continues to recover from Hurricane Katrina’s damage. A pilot episode written by “The Wire” creator David Simon and co-creator Eric Overmyer was shot in March and April. HBO wasn’t expected to decide the show’s fate for several more weeks, but the rough cut of the pilot that Simon delivered — minus final soundtrack music, which will play a major role in the series — was enough to sell HBO on the series, who have now given it the greenlight!

The series’ first-season story will begin several weeks after Hurricane Katrina and follow its characters — based on real-life models Kermit Ruffins, Donald Harrison Jr. and Davis Rogan, among others — at least through the first Mardi Gras after Katrina. Each season of the series would advance the story one year further from the storm. Ruffins plays himself in the pilot.

To prepare yourself for this destined-for-greatness show, check out Ruffin’s latest release: Livin’ A Tremé Life. Named after the New Orleans neighborhood and lifestyle that’s been essential to the town’s musical and cultural history (as well as Kermit’s home), the album continues the big brass tradition the town is known for. Kermit plays a “sweet, sweet horn,” as Michael J. Agovino of Newsweek notes. His musical stylings resemble the culture of New Orleans, a melting pot, with Jazz, funk, standards and hip-hop. Ruffin’s charisma, both onstage and on his recordings, reflects the spirit of his city. Let his rich, raspy voice and the bright, clean blows on his horn transport you right to the Big Easy.
Congratulations to Kermit and Basin Street on the new show AND for debuting on the Billboard Jazz Charts this week at #18!
