Featured Artist: The Twilight Sad Forget the Night Ahead

Forget the Night Ahead, is the much anticipated, sophomore album from Scottish rockers, The Twilight Sad. The band has certainly stayed busy since the release of their acclaimed 2007 debut Fourteen Autumn, Fifteen Winters. Since then we’ve seen the band release a mini album Here, It Never Snowed. Afterwards It Did, and a collection of live tracks, covers and other previously unreleased songs “Killed My Parents and Hit the Road.” Throw a busy touring schedule into the mix, and it’s a wonder that the band was able to find enough time to hit the studio to record another full length.

The first thing that strikes me about Forget the Night Ahead, is that this release demands to be played loud. As fans of the band can attest, these tracks shine at volume, as the band makes a statement with feedback and walls of shimmering shoegaze. Its also interesting that while the style of the band has shifted away from their previous post-rock experimentations, the delivery is still the same. Quiet cedes to roaring walls of noise, with little warning. While past songs meandered, and built to climax, “Forget the Night Ahead” has been streamlined, almost stripped into something darker and more menacing. The band is no longer trying to draw you into the track with a beautiful melody, instead preferring an all out aural assault. Compare “Reflection of the Television,” to “Cold Days From the Birdhouse,” and you can see that the band is still after the same result, but simply taking a completely different approach. Gone is the accordion, glockenspiel and various kitschy instruments that have become expected on every indie release, replaced by good old fashioned feedback drenched riffage.

With The Twilight Sad, and the recently releasesd We Were Promised Jetpacks, we find the Scottish Guitar Army tradition alive and well. This is a must have for fans of anthemic, dark rock with a smattering of shoegaze.

Review: Vic Chesnutt

Title: At the Cut
Label: Constellation
Genre: Folk-Rock
Release Date: 9/22/09
UPC: 666561006020
Territory: World

The master of dark, brooding confessional music, Vic Chesnutt, has prepped his new album At The Cut for release on Constellation records. Hailing from the fruitful musical ground of Athens, Georgia (all of the Elephant 6 collective hails from there), Vic has been singing and writing songs since he was but a young lad of five years old. He is a prodigy of R. E. M.’s Michael Stipe who spotted Chesnutt at Athen’s great venue the 40 Watt Club and subsequently produced Chesnutt’s first two albums.

Stipe isn’t the only notable musician in Chesnutt’s wake; he has a long list of noteworthy collaborators from his 21+ years in music including members of Thee Silver Mt. Zion and the legendary Guy Picciotto of Fugazi. His debut record on Constellation records, North Star Deserter, was reviewed by Paste magazine as the outstanding album in the long list of his appearances in various projects. These efforts have fruited a core group of players that accompanied him on two European tours in support of the album: Thierry Amar (bass), Efrim Menuck (guitar), Jessica Moss (violin) and David Payant (drums) all of Thee Silver Mt. Zion, along with Guy Picciotto (guitar).

At The Cut presents a more naked Chesnutt, exposed and raw emotionally for the listener to dissect without restrain. The album’s powerful opener, “Coward” clearly depicts this as he shamelessly proclaims, “I am a coward” with an accompanying swell from the backing band. His voice sounds far from a gentle indie songsmith; this is a musician who focuses on charging each track on his album with real, passionate emotion of various kinds. Often a shrill, distorted and enraged guitar line will cut through a tense quiet moment of Chesnutt alone with the listener, whispering his inner thoughts and delivering appropriate responses to these confessions through instrumentation. Some of the songs like “We Hovered With Short Wings” are designed for smokey, dimly lit bars on weeknights where the crowd is estrange and tiered. Others like “Chinaberry Tree” are slow-motion car rides through surreal, dark scenery; branches bending over the windows like jagged teeth and mysterious fauna darting through their crooked roots. Overall, there’s a dark, brooding, raw feeling to the whole album; it really does play unlike other contemporary indie artists. It’s not quite sad, it’s not quite malicious, it’s not quite hopeless. Instead Chesnutt gives his listener a front row ticket to his confessional and agrees with their reactions; he is aware of his sins.

This is definitely a new take on cold-weather music. If the usual acoustic guitar and soft, melancholy vocals isn’t doing it for you anymore, take a walk on the dark side and hear what Vic Chesnutt has to whisper to you in the darkest of corners. Very haunting.

Review: Egadz!

Title: Egadz is Dead
Label: Kid Without Radio
Genre: Electronic
Release Date: 9/15/09
UPC: 844185066808
Territory: World

Egadz is Dead is to be the final album under that moniker for producer/beat maker Erik Nava. Although fans of Egadz! will no doubt be sad to learn this fact be assured that Erik will continue to make dope beats under the new moniker NAVA. Before that transition is complete Egadz! gives us one more electro-hip-hop-a-delic ride.

After establishing an amazing worldwide following with his first two albums Monotony and Shining Hours, Egadz! continues to prove why he is one of the most flexible and eclectic artists in the Electronic genre. His latest album, Egadz Is Dead features his signature style of melodic – half acoustic – psychedelic electronica.” -the POP! stereo

The blog love for Egadz is Dead is already abundant and many are calling it his best record to date. Replete with the type of glitched out MPC beats Egadz! fans have come to love Egadz is Dead is a powerful final chapter in the story of Egadz! From the opening of the first track to the very end of the record Egadz! keeps the beats bumping. While earlier albums would diverge at times into more ambient soundscapes Egadz is Dead keeps the beat going throughout. Comparisons have been drawn to many great DJ/producers from DJ Shadow to Aphex Twin, but the truth is Egadz! has created his own style of instrumental electro-hip-hop. One thing these comparisons do point to is that key distinction between programming machines and making music. Anyone with a computer these days can program beats, but few can elevate that practice to a true art form the way Egadz! does.

While some will mourn the loss of Egadz! unique style and artistry, many eagerly await his rebirth as NAVA. Judging from the first track posted on the new NAVA Myspace page the same talent, artistry and passion will no doubt be poured into this new project. Rest In Peace Egadz!

 Digital Digging: Milton Nascimentos Travessia

Extracts from text by João Máximo

If there is an album which paints a faithful portrait of a specific moment in Brazilian popular music – and is also fundamental in telling the story of the trajectory of a great singer and composer – that album is Milton Nascimento’s Travessia. The record was first released in 1967 on LP by the now defunct label Codil and will be re-released for the first time digital by one of Brazil’s up and coming labels, Dubas, on September 22, 2009.

Many are the odd episodes prior and during the recording of this album. We might start with the impact felt all over the country when a then-unknown Milton stepped onto the stage of Maracanãzinho Stadium, all by himself, wearing a tuxedo, carrying a oddly tuned guitar which sounded different, to perform the song “Travessia”, so new and so irresistibly weird – something in between Rio’s samba-canção and the chants from the state of Minas Gerais – that the jury of the II International Music Festival, not knowing if they were supposed to award the composer or performer, decided to award Milton.

Milton’s and his song’s success at the II Festival was the starting point for the album. Luiz Eça made the arrangements, “Travessia”’s adapted from the original by Eumir Deodato, another one of Milton’s mentors. Eça and his Tamba Trio accompanied him in the album.

The involvement with Luiz Eça, Tamba Trio’s pianist, who so strongly influenced a whole generation of musicians, came before that. “He was my idol and when I first met him, my knees were shaking. But he was so friendly that I used to go to his house everyday just to hang around”, says Milton. “When the idea of the album came up, I wanted him to make the arrangements and everything turned out all right”.

Besides “Travessia” and “Maria Minha Fé”, the album also features three hits, “Morro Velho” (with arrangements by maestro Lyrio Panicalli), “Canção do Sal” and “Outubro”. Even today, Eça’s arrangements for the orchestra and the base group (where Bebeto from Tamba Trio was also a member) sound very sophisticated and were enhanced by the remastering job, which was closely followed by Milton.

Title: Year in the Kingdom
Label: Western Vinyl
Genre: Indie : Psychedelic Folk
Release Date: 9/15/09
UPC: 656605460222
Territory: Americas, Africa

Year in the Kingdom is the 6th solo release for singer/songwriter J. Tillman. Today most people who are familiar with Tillman know him as the drummer for the acclaimed indie folk band Fleet Foxes. Tillman got his start playing drums for several indie rock bands including Saxon Shore during his college years in New York. On the side he wrote and recorded his own music inspired by folk icons such as Nick Drake and Pete Seeger. Tillman began selling and distributing CD-R demos while playing out and eventually one found it’s way to Damien Jurado. After hearing Tillman’s songs Jurado decided to bring him on tour as his drummer and occasional opening act. During the tour Tillman became close with Jurado’s friend and band-mate Eric Fisher who would later produce Tillman’s second effort Long May You Run. As Tillman became more and more involved in the Seattle indie folk scene he befriended several members of the rising band Fleet Foxes. At the end of April 2008 it was announced that J. Tillman was joining the Foxes as their new drummer.

With his latest release Tillman is clearly holding fast to what he does best – pure honest lyrics backed sparsely by an interesting blend of instruments. Hammer dulcimer, recorder, cymbals of varying size and wheezing air organs all help to create the unique backdrop for Tillman’s vocals. In contrast to his previous album Vacilando Territory Blues Tillman’s latest record does not feature any of the other Foxes or their signature vocal harmonies. Rather Year in the Kingdom is a stark folk record that places Tillman’s unaffected voice at the forefront. This album is a true work of art and another glimpse into Tillman’s very being. With the whole pop music world becoming increasingly digitized and auto-tuned, it is truly a gift that musicians like Tillman still give us honest music.

Though stark and at times almost somber Year in the Kingdom is a record of hope and for those who have followed his solo career clearly his most joyful work to date. The title track has a beautiful happiness to it that seems to convey Tillman’s true feelings on life. The moving ballad Earthly Bodies is a celebration of this world we live in and the bodies that hold our spirits. Tillman has established himself as a real folk troubadour and this record clearly places him with the best of his generation. Year in the Kingdom embodies everything we want in a folk record: Honesty and truth with a beautiful stark accompaniment.
