Featured Label: Interchill Records

Featured Label: Interchill RecordsThe following is an interview with Andrew Ross Collins, owner of Interchill Records:

Can you give us a brief overview of Interchill (and Mariko) and the history of the label?

Interchill started in Montreal in 1995, born out of the golden age of epic chill zones at raves. The all Canadian ambient downtempo focus at the beginning has grown to encompass wider horizons of sounds from all across the world, with depth in worldbeat, dub, and all forms of electronica. Artists who have released albums on Interchill include Liquid Stranger, Gaudi, Kaya Project, Ishq, Bluetech and Eat Static to name a few. Mariko Music Publishing handles publishing administration and licensing for Interchill releases. Interchill Independent is an artist services and consulting venture to assist artists with their own releases. Nowadays Interchill is based in BC, Canada and run by Andrew & Naasko.

What is your favorite thing about running an indie record label?

Seeing the big picture, being flexible, being able to make creative decisions and working with highly talented, creative people.

Are there any new releases we can look forward to?

Liquid Stranger’s Cryogenic Encounters on Feb 1st and Sunmonx release their debut album Power Salad on March 14th.

R.I.P. Jennifer Miro Anderson, Singer From San Francisco Punk Band the Nuns

It is with great sadness that we learned today of the passing of a true San Francisco legend, Jennifer “Miro” Anderson. Anderson, singer for the 1970s and 80s punk act the Nuns, died of cancer-related causes last month in New York City, at age 54. Anderson was a musician, writer, and model whose doll-like looks and seductive voice helped make a name for pioneering San Francisco punk band the Nuns.

Anderson, also known as Jennifer Miro or Mistress Jennifer, was diagnosed with both liver and breast cancer, according to her neighbor, Jill Lamar, who helped care for Anderson in the final months of her life. She refused standard treatments and hospitalization for her illness, instead Anderson chose to treat herself with exercise and homeopathic drugs. Anderson spent her last months in her Manhattan studio apartment, aided by visiting nurses and Lamar. She passed away Dec. 16, 2011, at Bellevue Hospital in New York.

Matthew Dear’s EP, Headcage, stands as a testament to the New Yorker’s work as a relentless songwriter, producer and in a new light, collaborator. Working with other producers and vocalists as well as mixing/tracking at Nicolas Vernhes’ famed Rare Book Room studio has lent Headcage an openness and poise to the four songs presented here. The vision found in this EP is a likely harbinger for things to come from Dear.
