The Phenomenal Handclap Band Headline the Bowery Ballroom Tonight

December 11th, 2009 View Comments

091214 r19112 p233 The Phenomenal Handclap Band Headline the Bowery Ballroom TonightRecent subjects of one of the infamous doodles in The New Yorker, The Phenomenal Handclap Band have been ramping up press in the latter part of 2009.  From the awesomely mischievous video of “15 to 20″ airing on MTV’s Subterranean to best of 2009 lists to the approval of one Sasha Frere-Jones, this collective deserves a round of applause… err, handclaps.  If you’re in NYC tonight, don’t miss them headlining Bowery Ballroom!

From The New Yorker:

“A few years ago, the producers Daniel Collás and Sean Marquand were working with other musicians, like the New York salsa legend Joe Bataan, when they decided to start something from the ground up. The result is the Phenomenal Handclap Band, and you’ll need both hands to count all the personnel, which sometimes includes members of the Dap-Kings and TV on the Radio. What makes this collective appealing is its disregard for genre, which is no longer a new strategy, though this bunch reaches its own spacey conclusions. Collás and Marquand are both d.j.s with a taste for psychedelic disco and rock, and this makes their outfit feel more like a commune than an army. Songs drift from Miami disco into Brazilian soul into early New York rap, much like a friendly night at a bar with a guy flipping through his favorite records. The relaxed feel masks a lot of work—you can’t just invite your ten best friends down to the pub and hope they make sense of decades of music history. The band plays at the Bowery Ballroom Dec. 11.”

Featured Label: Nomadic Wax

December 9th, 2009 View Comments

logo Nomadic wax 300x120 Featured Label: Nomadic WaxTen years ago Nomadic Wax was no more than founder Ben Herson’s idea that Senegalese hip hop needed to be spread more widely about the globe. Today this budding record label and production company has already made great strides in realizing that idea. From their hip hop compilations to their mini-documentary series Democracy In Dakar to the annual CMJ global hip hop showcase that they put on; Nomadic Wax is realizing their goal of spreading awareness and incredible music.

“In the summer of 1999, Nomadic Wax founder Ben Herson stumbled upon a thriving hip hop scene in Senegal, West Africa. Enthralled by the politically and socially conscious lyrics of the emcees he encountered, Herson researched and wrote his award-winning undergraduate dissertation Fat Beats, Dope Rhymes, and Thug Lives: Hip Hop, Youth and Politics in Senegal. In 2001, Herson returned to Senegal with collaborator Dan Cantor of Notable Productions. The two set up shop in a spare room in a Dakar community center to record African Underground Vol. 1, a compilation featuring fourteen of Dakar’s illest emcees.

Since 2001, Nomadic Wax has grown into an internationally recognized brand in global urban music and media, working with hundreds of pioneering artists worldwide. Focusing on Africa and the African diaspora, Nomadic Wax has expanded its projects into the Middle East, South America, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean.” -Nomadic Wax

In the years since African Underground Vol. 1 Nomadic Wax has gained considerable steam and many are taking notice of their pioneering efforts. Nomadic and Herson have been featured by the BBC, The New York Sun, The Brooklyn Rail and even Billboard Magazine not to mention many other music blogs. Their model of a record label that includes a full scale audio/video production company has been the perfect platform for artists from Senegal and beyond. As they grow so does global awareness not only of the music itself but of the political and social issues that the music conveys. This is the true power of Nomadic Wax. Beyond record sales and material success Nomadic focuses on the power of words to raise awareness and change the world.

“In 2000, rappers spoke about how we could change the nation. People understood and we changed the government. Until we spoke people didn’t believe this could happen,” -Senegalese rapper and Nomadic Wax artist Baay Bia

Jawbox Reunite on Jimmy Fallon Tonight Around Reissue

December 8th, 2009 View Comments

For Your Own Special SweetheartSeminal post-punkers, Jawbox, will perform on the Jimmy Fallon show tonight; their first performance together in 12 years.  November saw the reissue of their 1994 album, For Your Own Special Sweetheart, which has be remastered to the bands liking and enhanced with 3 bonus tracks from an E.P. originally released the same year.

Billboard interviewed Kim Coletta of the band this week about a potential reunion beyond tonight’s appearance:  “Coletta says the Jawbox’s ‘Jimmy Fallon’ performance will be ‘a safe way of seeing if it’s still fun to play together, or get back together. It’s an easy way to test the waters. I can’t say whether it’s going to lead to a full-length show or any touring, but we’ll see. We’re taking it one step at a time.’”

Jencarlos’ debut record storming the charts plus new music video

December 1st, 2009 View Comments

Title: Buscame
Label: Bullseye Music/Select O Hits
Genre: Latin : Pop
UPC: 097037891428
Territory: Americas
Release Date: 11.10.09

Telenovela mega-star Jencarlos’ debut record Buscame has been experiencing a windfall of success in it’s opening weeks. Charting on the Billboard top 200 (#91), Indie Albums (#6)  and Latin Albums (#2) in it’s 1st week, Buscame continues to sell well entering it’s 4th week. The music business is taking note with even Billboard itself marveling at the early success.

“In what may be the highest-ever first-week position on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart from a debut act with independent distribution, Jencarlos’ “Búscame” debuts this week at No. 2.” -Ayala Ben-Yehuda for billboard.biz

The lead single “Amor Quedate” is also experiencing huge success helped in large part by it’s placement as the theme song for the telenovela “Más Sabe el Diablo,” which Jencarlos stars in. Our congratulations to Jencarlos, Bullseye Music and Select O Hits on a great campaign. It seems the album’s title is a bit paradoxical as clearly many have already found Jencarlos!

Featured Artist: Souls Of Mischief “Montezuma’s Revenge”

December 1st, 2009 View Comments

Title: Montezuma’s Revenge
Label: Hieroglyphics Imperium
Genre: Hip-Hop : Rap
UPC: 822497103329
Territory: World
Release Date: 12.1.09

Bay Area hip hop legends and original Hieroglyphics members Souls Of Mischief are back in action with their first full-length album in over 9 years. With the full Souls line-up, production from the illustrious Prince Paul and even guest narration from Del Tha Funkee Homosapien Montezuma’s Revenge is an instant Bay Area hip hop classic. To ensure the best possible results on their latest record the Souls took a slightly atypical approach to recording this new record.

“We rented a house near Point Reyes. We stayed in the house for at least a month,” explains Opio. “Prince Paul came out, we had no TVs or distractions, we just did music every day. It kind of seemed like he might be a slave driver, but it didn’t come to that, he just let us do our thing. We knew he wanted a highly stylized album, so we just focused on the styles.” “It was cool, because Paul was making us do stuff over, and he really did help produce the record,” adds Tajai. “He had concepts, and its good to have an outside perspective – it was a great process.”

The process paid off as Montezuma’s Revenge is on par with classics like the timeless ‘93 Til Infinity. Combining lyrical skill with humorous skits and hard hitting beats the Souls are at the top of their game. From the classic sound and smooth narrative of “Tour Stories” to the more hyphy sounding and playful “Poets” the Souls clearly haven’t lost a step since their early days. On “For Real Y’All” the Souls shine at what they do best; seamlessly trading bars throughout the verses and weaving in the refrain. On much of Montezuma’s Revenge the Souls put on a clinic in the lost art of true group rapping. They even poke fun at themselves and their ‘old school’ style on “Morgan Freeman,” showing their awareness of their place in the hip hop game. From underground to mainstream, hyphy to crunk the hip hop community would do well to take a page from the Souls book.

Featured Release: Unpiecing the Jigsaw- A Tribute to The Velvet Underground

November 24th, 2009 View Comments

By: Michael Madavi

293131 72 Featured Release: Unpiecing the Jigsaw A Tribute to The Velvet Underground

Artist: Various Artists
Title: Unpiecing the Jigsaw – A Tribute to the Velvet Underground
Label: Ozit
Genre: Rock : Alternative
UPC: 811702010422
Territory: World
Release Date: 11.23.09

The fertile music breeding ground of New York City arguably reached its peak in the second half of the 60’s, headed by Bob Dylan on the folk side and a band that achieved no where near Dylan’s sales numbers but still generated a tidal wave of influence that only spread and expanded with time, their effect still felt in present day: The Velvet Underground. In their relatively short 4 active years as a core unit, Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and drummer Maureen Tucker (with, of course, Warhol superstar Nico, and later Doug Yule) created four of the most prolific records ever: The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967), White Light/White Heat (1968), The Velvet Underground (1969), and Loaded (1970). Though internally turbulent with members often clashing (notably the founders Reed and Cale), the group managed to experiment with rock music in ways never before attempted.

IODA and Otiz Records are proud to announce the release of Unpiecing the Jigsaw – A Tribute to The Velvet Underground, a collection of excellent Velvet covers from your favorite artists. While there has been covers compilations in the past, Unpiecing the Jigsaw features a collection of the best of the best, assembled in part by Lou Reed himself and also as a deal-sweetener features two rare 1980’s bootlegs of Nico performing her songs from TVU & Nico and a 48 minute interview with Reed himself. This is the most complete and inclusive VU covers compilation to date.

The artists featured are international with a large showing from English pop, alt-rock, new wave, and especially shoegaze bands from the late 80’s and early 90’s as well as Washington 90’s alternative groups and garage rockers. The immortalized Nirvana contribute a surprisingly calmer choice for such a fantastically aggressive band: “Here She Comes Now” off of White Light/ White Heat (don’t worry though, Kurt’s buzzsaw distortion and snarl still garnish the track). A notable name in the early 90’s British shoegaze scene, Chapterhouse (who often played and collaborated with heavy hitters Slowdive and Ride) tackle “Lady Godiva’s Operation” in expected dreamy fashion. A fixture of the British Indie rock scene for decades now, The Wedding Present presents a laid back, acoustically backed rendering of Lou Reed’s “She’s My Best Friend,” a fantastic track recorded initially for the self-titled record but not released till after his departure from the group. The House of Love’s Terry Bickers’ shoegazed indie pop version of the Self Titled album’s track “I’m Set Free” goes down quite easily alongside the bigger names from the UK’s late 80’s menu.

The cult favorite Echo & the Bunnymen turn out an energetic “Foggy Notion.” A real standout cover from a name that might not immediately catch everyone’s eye, Hurrah’s version of the unanimously loved Lou Reed- crafted jam “Sweet Jane” is just as infectious and uplifting as the original. A more tamed number, the Levellers’ “Some Kinda Love” sends acoustic rhythms steadily forward into swelling, heavily effected guitars and flying falsettos (a little known fact about The Levellers: they had more gold and platinum selling albums in the 1990’s than any other UK band in that decade!). Manchester’s James found great success in the early 90’s and once billed Radiohead as an opener. Their cover of “Sunday Morning” would be better described as a performance of the original rather than a reworking; the group manages to maintain the song’s captivity of that lazy, warm, early Sunday feeling. The Dutch band Beef (who often finds themselves playing in a reggae setting, but offers a surprisingly diverse repertoire) do a really great version of Nico’s “Femme Fatale” off of Underground’s immortal debut album. This version sounds more pop-ie than the original, but consequentially it’s really uplifting and even more infectious than the normal recording.

New Order Bassist Peter Hook’s side project Revenge (formed during Order’s hiatus in the twilight of the 80’s) gives the title track from White Light/ White Heat a very The-Clash-ified treatment, garnished with snarled vocals and fuzzy guitar work while still hinting at the qualities of New Order that made them a legendary act in their own right. Wait for the sudden swell right before the outtro; this one will really get you moving! Sonic Youth founder/guitarist Lee Renaldo delivers on “Stephanie Says,” a track originally bootlegged then later released on the compilation Gold. He combines an almost island-tropical slide guitar (think Maui) with the signature Sonic Youth super-fuzz, a feat that really demands true talent to achieve! Definitely one of the best covers on the whole compilation.

English noise/space rockers The Telescopes utilize their secondary vocalist Joanna Doran’s droning shoegazed vocals to imitate Nico pretty damn well. You’ll hear the similarities with their contemporaries the Jesus and Mary Chain, Spacemen 3, and of course My Bloody Valentine. Second wave shoegazers Ride (who feature Andy Bell, the bassist-to-be for Oasis) bring one of the most droned-out tracks to the album, pitch-bending the living daylight out of TVU + Nico’s “European Son.” If you haven’t noticed how seriously influenced all your favorite shoegazers were by the Undergrounds use of continuous background drone (the most obvious and commonly cited example being “Venus in Furs”) it’s time to pay due diligence. The genre itself may very well have not come to fruition without the Underground’s influence. Garage rock punks The Original Sins hail from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and are considered by purists to be one of the best underground acts of their time (REM’s Peter Buck produced one of their albums, but it failed to meet commercial success as just as it was released grunge had arrived and caught the attention of most major record companies). They contribute a great garage version of “Head Held High” off of Loaded.

Alt-rock group the Screaming Trees are often cited alongside their Washington brethren Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Pearl Jam as Grunge pioneers (also to an extent, the Melvins), even being signed from Sub-Pop to Epic Records in similar fashion to Nirvana. They do a phaser-ed out version of “What Goes On” that makes you bob your head as steadily as the original. The cult favorites Half Japanese do a fantastic performance, true to the original’s swagger, of WL/ WH’s “I Heard Her Call My Name.” Their band, headed by brothers Jed and David Fair, was formed in 1975 and has achieved an underground following (Kurt Cobain has them open for Nirvana on their 1993 tour and is said to have died in one of their shirts). Ride companions and fellow English shoegazers Swervedriver give “Jesus” off of the self-titled LP a dreamy, ethereal makeover, dipping the track in shimmering guitar lines and plenty of reverb.

Definitely one of the most interesting tracks on the record, “Lady Godiva’s Operation” is reworked by controversial 80’s Irish art-rockers and noise-rock predecessors The Fatima Mansions (who’s keyboardist/vocalist Cathal Coughlan would later go on to form Cork). The group mixes heavy drum machine use and swirling synth waves with fuzzed-out redline vocals and spoken word clips as well as the occasional buzzsaw or scream. This is taking the Velvet Undergound’s experimentation to a whole different level. I’m sure when this was originally released, people wrote it off as rubbish but in today’s noise market, this would be solid gold (John peel said he could listen to Coughlan “sing the phone book.”

Also included are a couple of pretty hardcore bootleg recordings of Nico’s unmistakable deadpan singing on two of the Underground’s most distinguished tracks featuring her: “Femme Fatale” and “All Tomorrow’s Parties” (also included is a seriously 80’s-synth’ed out cover of this track by The Reegs and an alt-rock interpretation by J Mascis prodigies Buffalo Tom). The compilation’s value (as if all this wasn’t enough already) is increased even more by a length 48-minute interview with Lou Reed by John Tobler.
