Baths is really 21-year-old L.A. music-maker, Will Wiesenfeld. Over the last six years, under the handle of [Post-Foetus], Wiesenfeld has gainfully explored the intersections and outer reaches of both electronic and acoustic music. With Baths, his eclecticism finds its greatest focus yet, in a hail of lush melodies, ghostly choirs, playful instrumentation and stuttering beats. Cerulean is the auspicious debut of L.A.’s Baths. Evolving out of Will Wiesenfeld’s varied [Post-Foetus] project, and inspired by the energy of the L.A.’s burgeoning beat scene, the record represents a clear departure from both – an often warm, acoustic-fueled electronic music that hews closer to the work of contemporaries like Toro Y Moi. By combining songwriting with self-sampling, raw musicianship with synthesized textures, and field recordings with propulsive beats, Baths has created a seething sound-cloud packed with bright moments and prone to unexpected turns. Here are Baths tour dates:

Tender Trap started in 2001 with Amelia Fletcher and Rob Pursey and a small 8 track machine. John Stanley (aka DJ Downfall) joined the band to help create rhythm tracks and play the bass. After a prolonged hiatus, Tender Trap are back with two brand new band members: Katrina Dixon (ex Police Cat, Sally Skull) on drums and vocals and Elizabeth Darling (‘Allo Darlin’) on keyboards, guitar and vocals. Dansette Dansette combines the harmonies, oohs, ahs and sha-la-las of classic girl-pop with the stripped down beats and dirty guitars of the Shop Assistants and The Vaselines. Tender Trap has a July tour through the UK:

The Bay Area quartet The Stone Foxes is made up of brothers Shannon and Spence Koehler, Aaron Mort, and Avi Vincour. Bears & Bulls is their second album, and it’s full of great song writing, warm guitars, a nut-tight rhythm section, and occasional blues harp riffs. The band is influenced by the greats of the late 60s and early 70s like The Band, Bob Dylan, and Led Zeppelin, but it’s the way they create and record their music that sets them apart. Huge fans of playing live, The Stone Foxes develop their music onstage over a period of time. To record Bears & Bulls, the band built their own studio and recorded it with almost no overdubs to keep that live energy flowing. Starting in July, they’ll be embarking on a West coast tour:

Chilling. Stirring. Powerful. Contemplative. These are some of the words most frequently used to describe the achingly beautiful piano instrumentals of Carly Comando. Her debut album One Take features ten delicately woven songs (including her single, “Everday”) that are the direct emotional output of her innermost thoughts. “The album means the world to me. It’s complete, in-the-moment sincerity translated into moody solo piano music. I used an improv technique, recording in just one take, so I could capture the essence of pure emotion” says Carly. From the rises and falls to the shrinks and swells, these songs will leave an indelible impression on your mind. It’s music that stays with you forever.

Carly’s well known piano ballad “Everyday” is the score to viral video “Noah Takes a Photo of Himself Every Day For 6 Years” which has been viewed 16,000,000 times on YouTube alone. The video features a rapid fire sequence of nearly 2,400 photos of Noah Kalina, who took a picture of himself in an identical pose every single day for 6 years. It has been featured on CBS News, Good Morning America, VH1′s 40 Greatest Internet Superstars and was spoofed on The Simpsons’ episode “Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind.” Carly was honored by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences with a Primetime Emmy Award for her musical contribution to The Simpsons episode.

Here’s the famous video:

“Everyday” currently serves as the score to Amnesty International’s “Death to the Death Penalty” ad campaign and has also been used in the NBA’s “Where Amazing Happens”

Featured Artist: The Stone Foxes – “Bears & Bulls”

stone foxes1 Featured Artist: The Stone Foxes Bears & BullsArtist: The Stone Foxes
Title: Bears & Bulls
Label: The Stone Foxes
Genre: Rock & Roll, Blues
UPC: 700261302607
Territory: Worldwide
Release Date: 07.06.10

The Stone Foxes is a DIY kind of band that would much rather create their music live onstage than inside any studio. For this reason, members Shannon and Spence Koehler, Aaron Mort, and Avi Vincour record their songs only after they have worked them out during their shows. This unique approach is part of what makes The Stone Foxes such a pleasure to listen to (live and on record). Their music is constantly evolving and improving but it always maintains their signature marriage of rock n’ roll and the blues in a classically packaged, yet refreshing sound.

Bears & Bulls, the band’s sophomore album, is a prime example of how they combine rock & roll with the blues. The band demonstrates that they are students of the blues with the song, “I Killed Robert Johnson,” which is a classically formatted blues rock number that tells the story of how they killed the legendary, nearly mythical father of the blues (they also mention Sonny Boy Williamson). The album is ripe with stellar guitar and blues harp riffs. It has the power rock & roll songs like “Young Man” and “Patience,” as well as the slower, bluesier numbers such as “Easy” and the classic “Little Red Rooster” (special tip: blues fans should check out the Luther Allison version) that employs the harmonica to capture that Southern sound.

Another very unique feature of the band is that there is not a set lead singer – or a set anything for that matter. When the band says each song is unique and has its own personality, they mean it. All of the members contribute songs, but just because they write it doesn’t mean they will be the one singing it. Shannon explains, “It doesn’t matter who writes the lyrics, if someone else has a better voice for the song, they sing it.” Since the lead singer is always rotating, who’s playing what also changes: “Shannon may come out from behind the drums to sing and play harmonica while Avi replaces him. Aaron, Spence and Avi regularly swap rhythm, lead, and bass duties.” This is one talented group of gentleman.

Adding to the band’s already impressive multitasking skills, they also built their very own all-analog studio in the heart of their (and IODA’s!) hometown, San Francisco. Through recording in their personal studio and using minimal overdubs their music maintains all its live energy and sound. Says Vincour, “Recording in our own studio really allows us to connect directly to the listener; it comes right from us to the fans.” For this reason, by listening to Bears & Bulls you are learning exactly who and what The Stone Foxes are. What you hear on their album really is what you get, and with a band of this caliber, that is a very, very good thing.

We Were Promised Jetpacks on Daytrotter Sessions

July 6th, 2010 View Comments

WWPJp11 300x300 We Were Promised Jetpacks on Daytrotter SessionsAwesome Scottish indie rock band We Were Promised Jetpacks had the pleasure of playing the Daytrotter Sessions this week. The band is made up of Adam Thompson, Michael Palmer, Sean Smith and Darren Lackie. During the session, they played songs off their album These Four Walls. From Daytrotter: “The band [...] makes its music feel as if there’s nothing like a good catharsis, something to jar the system – as if the smelling salts had been brought out and, suddenly, things are different. There’s nothing quite like getting those personal injustices off of a chest, just rearing back and letting loose with some pent up rustling, trying to push the moon further back in the sky by a couple hundred feet. It’s an emotional stream of thought that [singer] Thompson taps into and his bandmates execute, bringing to life all of the feelings that were already feeling very lively within them, hurting them a bit as they simmered and grew into meaningful assignments of blame. There’s a desire and a yearning on the group’s last full-length, These Four Walls, that want for just a little something more, any kind of replacement of the stagnancy for something that’s charged, something that’s a bit scary. It’s a plea for youth again and it’s a plea for such things that make us choke on our breaths again, anything that will get us worked up.” Listen to their session here.

Daytrotter is known for selecting unique and impressive artists, so this is quite an accomplishment for Jetpacks. They now join the ranks of fellow IODA artists that have played on the Daytrotter Sessions such as Frightened Rabbit, J. Tillman, Alela Diane, Brother Ali, Deastro, Andrew W.K., Christopher Denny, David Karsten Daniels, Sean Hayes, The Papercuts, Nina Nastasia and more.

Swahili Blonde began with Nicole Turley sitting in a room amidst a bunch of instruments and recording equipment she didn’t know how to use. After many nights, she still didn’t completely understand how everything worked, but was happy with the compositions she made. So happy in fact, that she decided to record and release a collection of songs for a full-length album, humorously called Man Meat.
