featured label quannum1 Featured Label: Quannum ProjectsNearly 18 years ago in the sleepy town of Davis, CA. a hip hop collective began which would change the face of independent hip hop forever. Formed under the name Solesides by Lyrics Born, DJ Shadow, and Chief Xcel the collective was born out of the dark depths of UC Davis’ KDVS radio station under the tutelage of KDVS DJ Jeff Chang (DJ Zen). With a wealth of talent, ingenuity and drive and pretty much no music business experience Solesides launched with the mission of bringing good hip hop to Northern California and the world at large.

“The original idea was to do a series of 12-inch records with different artists on each side, hence “sole sides.” And there would be no shortage of talent to pick from as the core of the crew quickly expanded.” -villagevoice.com

Among the next to join the crew were Gift of Gab and Lateef the Truth Speaker both of whom moved to Davis when word of Solesides reached them through pals Chief Xcel and Lyrics Born. Shortly thereafter in February 1993 they released their first 12-inch: Lyrics Born’s “Send Them, Tom” on the A-side with DJ Shadow’s “Entropy” on the B-side. “Entropy” would turn out to be the bigger success and paved the way for Shadow’s eventual release of Entroducing his groundbreaking debut LP on James LaVelle’s Mo’ Wax label.

Releases began steadily pouring out of Solesides and they started making a name for themselves. As Solesides gained momentum and more releases under it’s belt the fledgling label hit a wall: It had fulfilled it’s initial goal and needed a new directive. The guys decided the best thing to do was to dissolve Solesides and start a new collective with a new mission statement. Enter Quannum Projects.

1997 saw the official forming of Quannum Projects, but it would be two years before they actually released a new record. As they began to get the label off the ground it became clear they needed some help. In September 1999 Isaac Bess was hired as GM for Quannum bringing his indie label experience and savvy to the Quannum family. Over the next 9 plus years Bess helped build Quannum from a loose collective to a successful indie label. With releases like Blackalicious’ Nia and Lyrics Born’s Later That Day Quannum had succeeded in establishing themselves as a prominent voice in independent hip hop. As the years went on management changed and new artists were signed yet the mission remained the same.

Now host to a wider range of music Quannum serves as a home for artists such as Brazilian samba-funk maestro Curumin, LA rapper Pigeon John and electronic acts General Elektriks and ApSci. As they continue to grow and diversify one thing stays the same: The commitment made by a few friends almost two decades earlier to put out good independent music for all to hear.

Most people know Tommy T as the bass player for the gypsy-punk powerhouse Gogol Bordello. His thumping rhythms set the undercurrent for GB’s unique grooves. Growing up surrounded by music in Ethiopia, helps Tommy bring a globally oriented sense of rhythm to his bass playing. On his new record The Prester John Sessions Tommy takes the listener on a journey through Ethopian rhythms and gives us a sampling of the amazing music played in Ethiopia today. The record features 11 tracks including a remix featuring fellow GB band mates Eugene Hutz and Pedro Erazo mixed by Michael Goldwasser of the Easy Star All-Stars. It also features Gigi, one of the most popular modern Ethiopian singers, on two tracks.

“In the 70s, funk, wah-wah pedals, and jazz had a huge impact on Ethiopian music,” Tommy explains. “The Prester John Sessions will give people an idea about the musical diversity of Ethiopia, which includes influences and ideas borrowed from the sounds of the 70’s with the added bonus of up-to-date production values.”

The Prester John Sessions takes the listener on a journey through funk, jazz, reggae, dub and traditional Ethiopian rhythms all masterfully woven together by Tommy. It is an education in modern Ethiopian music and a voyage back through the sounds of the 70’s. Tommy gets to show off his versatility playing many different instruments not including the bass.

“I believe in music without boundaries,” Tommy says. “Music should be inclusive, not exclusive. People who love music know the best music is created without boundaries and limitations. The Prester John Sessions take that idea to the next level.”

Sonia Pottinger and Her Treasure Isle Records

October 27th, 2009 View Comments

OBS SONIA POTTINGER A TRUE JAMAICAN MUSICAL HEROINE 1 Sonia Pottinger and Her Treasure Isle RecordsJamaica’s Supreme Court ruled last week that Sonia Pottinger is indeed the rightful owner of the famed Treasure Isle Records catalog. Sonia got her start in music back in 1965 when she opened Tip Top Records Shop and became a renowned supporter of the local Jamaican music scene. She started the labels SEP (Sonia E. Pottinger), Gayfeet, High Note, Glory Records and purchased the Treasure Isle catalog in 1975 from Arthur Stanley “Duke” Reid.

From the Jamaican Observer- “Almost on the eve of her victory in the Supreme Court, this ‘musical heroine’ struck a high note when she landed an online distribution deal with the US-based Independent Online Distribution Alliance (IODA). The deal will see her musical treasures being distributed worldwide distribution through IODA’s network of digital retail outlets, mobile retailers and subscription services.

This will pave the way for more glory to Sonia E Pottinger as under the three-tier agreement, IODA will distribute the songs through Notable Music which represents her own High Note and Treasure Isle Records.”

The Treasure Isle catalog is now available for purchase at well over 30 digital retail outlets across the globe; from iTunes, eMusic and Amazon MP3 to smaller niche services.

Here’s something you can take home to show mom; the fantastic and highly acclaimed Portland, Oregon group Pink Martini has been fusing the finest of high class style, period, and technique to create a wonderful and diverse catalog of original music over the past decade and a half. Think of them as a “little orchestra;” that’s how they like to be seen and the description fits. Martini creates a variety of songs in all different styles, much in the way a contemporary orchestra would, drawing on lounge chill outs, various Latin styles, old-fashioned pop, golden age Hollywood musicals, classical orchestral pieces, and a healthy dose of jazz. It really comes off as something very classy and professional without any rigidness or snobbery involved. In fact, Pink Martini reads quite the contrary and manages to capture the best ingredients from each of their different influences and blend them together in a very fun, yet smooth way.

Founded in 1994 by pianist Thomas M. Lauderdale, the group has harbored a wealth of critical praise and awards, all in celebration of their truly special dynamic. Lauderdale describes the band’s sound as “music of the world without being world music. It’s kind of like urban symphonic crossed with Cuban/Brazilian Carnival Parade.” We agree: the band was originally brought together to play upscale political functions in Portland, but expanded their lineup and took their fantastic group on the road, eventually making their European debut at the Cannes Film Festival. By 2003 they had toured France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Switzerland, Monaco, Greece, Turkey, Peru, Taiwan, Lebanon and of course the US, truly proving that their music was universally enjoyed and would be considered classic in time to come. Their world-savvy members also compose and perform their song’s lyrics in different languages including Croatian, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Arabic, and Modern Greek. Over 1.3 million copies of their debut record, releases on their own Heinz Records, Sympathique, have been sold worldwide. They picked up vocal powerhouse China Forbes on their second release (Pianist Lauderdale met Forbes while they were both studying at Harvard) and gained even more popularity, lending their music to popular television shows and movies such as The Sopranos and The West Wing amongst others. On New Year’s Eve 2005, Martini performed live at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland; the performance was aired live on NPR’s “Toast of the Nation” program and was recorded for a live DVD. They have performed on numerous noteworthy shows such as the BBC’s Later with Jools Holland and The Late Show with David Letterman and have performed at the Walt Disney Concert Hall three times on New Years Eve. Now that’s a respectable rap sheet.

As musical archeologists, Martini dig up the finest parts of the genres that have over time become universally revered and enjoyed due to a timeless nature. Pink Martini’s fourth studio album, Splendor In The Grass, encapsulates the band’s history and spirit of global collaboration and inclusivity. Comprised of nine original songs and four covers (with songs in English, Neapolitan, Italian, French and Spanish), Splendor In The Grass was recorded in the band’s hometown of Portland, and produced by Lauderdale. There’s spicy Latin groves next to beautiful vocal jazz pieces side by side with big band attitude wrapped in classic old-fashioned pop numbers. This could soundtrack almost any fun, classy party or conversely provide a great soundtrack to clean the house too; it’s the band’s universality that makes it stand out.

There’s just no denying it, Martini’s for all! Pick up a copy of Splendor In The Grass for yourself and get another for Mom; we promise she’ll love it.

Canadian electro-poppers Dragonette are back with their first album since 2007’s Galore. Fixin To Thrill is a strong sophmore effort from the Juno nominated quartet. Originally formed in 2005 by singer/songwriter Martina Sobara and bassist/producer Dan Kurtz (The New Deal), Dragonette vaulted on to the scene shortly thereafter opening for New Order in only their 2nd gig. Following their live success Sobara and Kurtz solidified a 4 person line-up and began working on Galore.

After finishing the record they got down to the business of becoming a touring band, playing clubs large and small across the planet, with stops at the legendary Glastonbury Festival, London’s historic Trafalgar Square, Spain’s Summercase,, V Festival and Australia’s traveling Parklife shindig along the way. They’ve headlined in Paris, Barcelona, London, Buenos Aries, Sao Paolo and beyond, and are a strong draw across their native Canada, selling out clubs and small theaters from Coast-to-coast.” -rcrdlbl.com

Following the success of Galore Dragonette went back into the studio and continued their development as a band. They emerged with Fixin To Thrill a 12 track powerhouse of electro pop goodness.  The album has already released in Europe, Canada and Australia and the early returns have been amazing. In Canada it has been in the top 5 iTunes Pop LPs, and currently sits in the Top 10 on the overall chart. In Australia “Pick Up The Phone” was iTunes Single Of The Week with one of the highest download totals of the year in that market for iTunes. In France “Boys and Girls” is #4 on the iTunes singles chart. The US results are yet to be determined, but one thing is clear, in a few short years Dragonette have vaulted to the forefront of the electro pop scene and with Fixin To Thrill have established themselves as a musical force.

Fixin To Thrill is the best electropop album of 2009, and makes a good claim for a place in the overall top ten. At the center of their charm lies Martina Sobrara, whose voice and image are huge selling points, but the real wonder of this band lies in their ability to surprise us. And whilst some might say that Fixin To Thrill is unexpected, those in the know have been talking about this band’s potential for years. It has been realized.” -Will Hines, Consequence of Sound

Review: Do Make Say Think- “Other Truths”

Review: Do Make Say Think Other TruthsThese days Canada has been developing sort of a draw for me: great hockey, friendly folks, nationalized healthcare, and (more relevantly) a slew of fantastic indie bands that have given our northern neighbor something truly great to boast about. Do Make Say Think is just one of the many, but more and more, the group has come to stand out from the fray. Hailing from Toronto, Ontario, the experimental post-rock group has been creating some wonderful and fascinating instrumental music since it’s formation in 1995. As it would seem these days most bands in Canada’s independent music scene are more than one or two degrees of separation from the enchanted indie powerhouse Arts & Crafts records, a couple of Do Make Say Think’s members, mainly Charles Spearing and Ohad Benchetrit, are contributors to the music of Broken Social Scene, Feist, and Valley of the Giants (with Spearin having even deeper burrowing roots with the label, having worked on BSS’s precursor, KC Accidental). Clearly their time in these groups as well as various other side projects have provided the members of DMST ample time and experience, leading them to hone their vision for each venture more precisely and with more potent results.

The group’s newest release, Other Truths (out now on Constellation records) may well be their boldest project yet. A daring new concept album that focuses on delivering powerful, long journeys rather than many short bursts, Other Truths weighs in at a mere 4 songs in total, which would suggest the record is of EP qualifications, but don’t be fooled; this is a full length LP as each song is a lengthy story waiting to be told. All of the four tracks, all titled after one of the words in the band’s name (which they adopted from the words written on the four walls of their first rehearsal space in an elementary school), clock in over 8 minutes with half clearing the twelve-minute mark. Each song feels more like a massive painting, much to overwhelming in substance to truly appreciate up close, yet filled with so many wonderful little details, you’d miss so much if you tried to take it all at once.

The only way left to approach it is to spend time with the record; learn each song and it’s entombed emotional treasure contained within each epic, sweeping movement or rapidly pieced together by complicated, challenging instrumentation. For the most part it’s instrumental, with only the rare gang vocal or hymn-like chant to accompany the music (featuring guests Akron/Family and guitarist Justin Small’s other band Lullabye Arkestra). All four songs have different tones and contain multiple movements within: “Do” is an upbeat opener that lifts you up then slowly descends into one of the album’s thickest, most epic moments with fuzz in tow. “Make” highlights the group’s impeccable sense of timing and features some skillful jazz based drumming that’s applied to a totally different musical setting; it also builds to a pretty epic moment. Both tracks feature great guitar work that’s in line with such alternative guitar heroes as the Kinsella brother’s work (American Football, Cap’n Jazz, and especially Ghosts and Vodka). “Say” takes a darker beginning and transforms it into (surprisingly and somehow) a more comforting, welcoming environment. Think is a soft, beautiful dream powered again by jazz-brushwork on the drums and reverberated, vibrato twisted guitar lines; all in all, a very fitting end to such a rich album. Like I said before, it’s hard to sum up all the great things about this record on a first listen; one must really take the time to notice the beautiful details and qualities to the record.

If you’re looking to take a break from the lyrically-driven or just need some fantastic, original instrumental music to help you clear your thoughts, this one’s definitely for you.

Mike Relm the SF based DJ/visual maestro is at it again with a new music video. This time it’s a remix of the track “Hot To Trot” off his last album Spectacle. In the music video Mike employs the use of a zoetrope attached to his turntable and footage from the Regency Center in San Francisco to create a stunning visual accompaniment to his masterful scratching and mixing.
