From iTunes: “We’ve been digging Dragonette’s second full-length, Fixin to Thrill, since its late- ’09 release and thought you might need a little ’80s-inspired bounce for your iPod.  This Canadian electro-pop trio features husband and wife Dan Kurtz (bass) and Martina Sorbara (vocals).  On “Pick Up the Phone”, Sorbara’s sugary vocals bring to mind Gwen Stefani and Katy Perry in cool-and-composed mod, as she please with someone she’s just married shotgun-style to pick up the phone so they can reconnect and continue setting the town afire.  It reminds us a bit of Little Boots, and it’s totally fun.”

From Rolling Stone’s Hype Monitor: “Listen If: Your favorite artists of the last few years were Lykke Li and Ladyhawke, and you’re looking to complete your holy trilogy of perfectly pouty pop.”

Featured Artist: The Undertones

June 29th, 2010 View Comments

By: Mike Madavi
artist 2583943 Featured Artist: The UndertonesThough the Undertones only released four albums and were active for a mere five years, they’ve managed to make a musical legacy that still gets them credited as one of the best power pop/garage rock/punk rock groups ever. Formed in 1975 in the city of Derry, Northern Ireland, the five piece of brothers John and Damian O’Neil, Drummer Bill Doherty, Bassist Michael Bradley, and vocalist Fergal Sharkey initially started out as a cover group, playing regular gigs in the famous Casbah club. With the introduction of punk rock to the UK music scene (primarily from the Sex Pistols. Buzzcocks, and imported by the Ramones), the group began to change their sound and introduced hammering, power chord oriented guitar hooks that were as infectious as the top groups of the time.

The band never truly received the recognition that those larger names out of the US and larger English cities now have, but their greatness was not all together overlooked; legendary BBC 1 radio DJ and musical enthusiast extraordinaire John Peel (who’s name you’ve seen in the title of countless band’s “Peel Sessions”) claimed that the first time he heard “Teenage Kicks,” the Undertones most recognized (and arguably best) track, he had to pull his car over. Peel would claim the song was his favorite ever for the remainder of his life and when he did sadly pass in 2004, he requested that his gravestone simply state his name and the song’s opening line. Let’s put it this way, if there was anyone who ever honestly gave any band a listen and could really claim to have an ear for talent, it was John Peel; that means if he says “Teenage Kicks” is the best track ever, it might damn well be true.

Until now the Undertones fantastic catalog wasn’t available on iTunes, but we’re pleased to announce the digital distribution of the band’s four albums, the Teenage Kicks EP, and a Best-Of Compilation. What was it that made Peel love their most recognized track? If I had to guess, I’d say the song’s balance is one factor: every different element from guitars to drums to Sharkey’s quivering vocals are all in total proportion (with not too much or too little of anything). Also, the song is probably the purest expressions of teenage punk pop I’ve ever heard: fairly simple in structure, a unison of angst with energy, happy and sad at the same time, and regarding emotions we all feel. Don’t take my word (maybe take John Peel’s word) for it, take a listen to the Undertones and see what all the fuss is about.

Here’s a bonus video of the group in 1976 performing “Teenage Kicks” on Top of The Pops. You’ll want to watch it again and again:

Digital Digging: These United States

June 28th, 2010 View Comments

tUS rooftop ETE 300x199 Digital Digging: These United StatesThese United States is the brainchild of Midwesterner Jesse Elliot. Jesse relocated from the Midwest to Washington D.C. where These United States was born with the help of singer-songwriter David Strackany (aka Paleo). Together the duo -along with around 30 D.C. area musicians- released TUS’s debut album, A Picture Of The Three Of Us At The Gate To The Garden Of Eden. If the album’s title didn’t give it away, Jesse is a big fan of words and doesn’t hesitate to use lots of them (a la Andrew Bird). His songs are full of classic American references such as Mark Twain, Jesse James, and Babe the Blue Ox. While he has received some criticism for his wordy lyrics, Jesse explains to NPR why his songs are the way they are – and why they won’t be changing any time soon: “There’s a lot going on. We have certainly caught much flak for the amount of words and characters that appear in our music. For me, personally, as far as the writing process goes, it’s a way of coping with the serious amount of information that exists in the world these days. Stitching it together in some big, chaotic patchwork is kind of how I make sense of all the pieces that are flying our way and everyone’s way every day.”

 Digital Digging: These United States
However, because of the flak Jesse received, TUS’s second album had a much shorter title: Crimes. But don’t be fooled by this reduction: “We decided we’d shorten the title of the second album,” Jesse says, “and then pack twice as many words inside of the album itself.” With Crimes Jesse was backed by a full band made up of Tom Hnatow, Robby Cosenza, Justin Craig, and Colin Kellog. This naturally resulted in a strikingly different sound than that of Picture. Due to the numerous musicians that cycled through Picture, the album successfully encorporated various styles: “Ticking off genres, These United States paint a bold checkmark in the columns of pop, folk, rock, country, jazz, and lounge…and further listens are sure to reveal plenty more.” The music of Crimes is a bit more focused, being described as “One part Rolling Thunder Revue, one part banged-and-bruised balladeering, two parts just plain strange, These United States have their sights set on a rock-and-roll reformation.” No doubt this change had something to do with having a constant band around. Jesse explained to NPR how his surroundings affect his music: “I think a lot of what you’re influenced by at any one particular point in time is maybe dictated by the other people that you’re with. I almost felt myself influenced by different things when I was with David Strackany, as opposed to all these hoodlums.” Together these hoodlums have also released Everything Touches Everything, an album full of  “unbridled rock and roll exuberance.”

Maestro Classical Podcast Episode 015: Composers in 2010 pt. 2
Originally conceived as a Royal Ballet-commissioned collaboration between composer Max Richter, choreographer Wayne McGregor and artist Julian Opie, Max Richter’s gorgeous score to ‘infra’ is deservedly given life of its own in this album-length release from FatCat’s instrumental/orchestral imprint 130701 Records.

The initial setting for ‘infra’ was as a ballet – written in autumn 2008 and premiered in November of the same year at The Royal Opera House in London – although here Richter’s score is given the full scope of a standalone new album. Expanded and extended from the original piece, ‘infra’ comprises music written for piano, electronics and string quintet, including the full performance score as well as material that has subsequently developed from the construction of the album – more a continued reference to the ballet than as a “studio album” in the strictest sense. The composition resonates with Max’s characteristic musical voice – majestic, involved textures; fluent and sweeping melodies; an enigmatic and inherently intellectual understanding of harmonic complexities that compels and mesmerizes.

Richter’s work on the ballet came initially from McGregor’s invitation, a request for 25 minutes of music for his piece, inspired by T.S. Elliot’s ‘The Wasteland’ and named after the Latin term for ‘below’. This eventually became more collaborative as the project developed – Wayne would ask for Max to extend or alter certain passages of music in accordance with his own amendments to his choreography and concept, whilst logging the whole process for a BBC documentary (broadcast, along with the ballet in full, on BBC2 in November 2008). The dance performance was backed with digital images created by Julian Opie – observational scenes of street life, haunting and curiously balletic despite being of the everyday – and Max’s score is an appropriately close reference to the traveling theme:

“I started thinking about making a piece on the theme of journeys. Like a road movie. Or a traveler’s notebook. Or like the second unit in a film – when the scene has been played, and the image cuts away to the landscape going by. This started me thinking about Schubert’s devastating and haunting “Winterreise” (Winter Journey), so I used some melodic material from Schubert as a found object in parts of my new piece.”

BBC Pioneering Neo-Classicist reveals her solo debut by Spencer Grady, October 13, 2009:
“We owe Rachel Grimes big.”
“..with Music for Egon Schiele …found the conviction and confidence to match her voice..”
“Her most wondrous gift was always her ability to paint the most evocative pictures in purest ivory and her lightness of touch allows majestic statements such as the Corner Room and Long Before Us to ring out, echoing with sensuousness and sentiment before drawing the listener back in.”

New York Times – Live Review by Allan Kozinn, October 14, 2009:
“..offered glimpses of an alternate universe in which expansive, unified projects are everything.”
“..overall serenity..”
“..her evident fascination with French music: Ravel and Debussy hover nearby (in the watery imagery and modal harmonies of “Bloodroot” for example)”

Description of “Crawdambo” from Quartet San Francisco violinist, Jeremy Cohen: “I wrote this piece as an homage to my teacher and mentor, Anne Crowden, who passed away in 2004. Anne instilled in me a dedication to musical expression that truly became the basis of my violin-playing. She communicated to me how important it is that the joy of music-making be evident in my playing at every moment. In this little musical “thank you” to Anne I found myself cooking up a musical soup of favorite sounds, techniques, and rock and classical-infused ideas held together by a mambo rhythm.”

Alkaline Trio frontman Matt Skiba has assembled a collection of brand new tracks he recorded somewhere in between breaks during Alkaline Trio’s relentless touring schedule. It’s been more than ten years since his last solo album (a split with Kevin Seconds), so we’re extremely excited to bring you Demos. Recorded over 2009 between Chicago and Los Angeles on his laptop, this is a telling and intimate look into the songwriting process of a band that has turned out countless horror-punk anthems. I can only estimate that the amount of times I’ve played “Radio” when hanging out with friends must be in the bajillions. The album notes tell us that the record was co-produced by Helmut the pitbull. Awesome.

Asian Man, being the kind and giving record label that they are, have provided us with a sneak preview of the track “S.O.S.” to share with you, the good people. Punknews.org also has a post up about the new record that has a ton of comments; join in the conversation! Enjoy and keep and eye out for the full album in August.

Featured Label: Wierd Records

June 23rd, 2010 View Comments

weird records21 300x286 Featured Label: Wierd RecordsNew York’s Wierd Records formed from a weekly music party known as the Wierd party. The party was established in 2003 by artist and DJ Pieter Schoolwerth and has long been NYC’s premier showcase for artists and DJs working within the Cold Wave, Minimal Synth, and Experimental Electronic/Industrial Noise genres of alternative pop and dance music. The party began as a small group of friends spinning records weekly at the Southside Lounge in Williamsburg, Brooklyn who in 2004 began staging larger, roaming monthly live music events in lofts and warehouses nearby. By the end of 2006 the party had outgrown its Brooklyn home and relocated to Home Sweet Home on Chrystie St. in Manhattan where it is held every Wednesday evening to this day. With the move, Pieter expanded the party into a record label to unify the label and party and give the community a geographically consistent home base. The label describes itself as a “hot new frozen cold record label for contemporary Post-Wave music under the very rare influences of early minimal synth, European coldwave, and classic British and American post punk.”

In the last 3 years Wierd has released music by many of the bands who have DJed and performed live at the party, such as Frank(Just Frank), Xeno and Oaklander, Led Er Est and Automelodi. Their releases began with The Wierd Compilation, a collection of music by their resident bands. In a feature on the label in FADER magazine, Schoolwerth explained the significance of the cold synth sound today: “In the world in general, and New York in particular, in a time when people are more and more becoming isolated all day by the internet alone at their computers and staring at the tiny sad glowing screens in their cellular hands, it only makes sense to me we are all feeling a slight sense of loneliness and (hopefully) desire for connection with others which is slowly slipping away year after year…this is one of the predominant feelings of the Wierd world—an affirmative sense of humanistic longing for true human connection conveyed through emotionally melancholic sounds.”

Apart from the over 400 weekly parties and live music events and over 200 released trax of frozen cold music Wierd has produced, both the party and label remain a vital part of the energy of both latenight downtown New York City and the outermost recesses of Brooklyn, and represents an underground spirit that is truly very rare in this day and age.

Featured Artist: Blip Blip Bleep – “Like Track Stars”

Release Date: 06.29.10

NY electro-rockers Blip Blip Bleep are readying for the release of their new record Like Track Stars. Blip Blip Bleep is the work of producer/singer/guitarist Sean Han, with the help of singer/keyboardist Alexa Danner and drummer Jojo Schwarz. After 2 stellar EPs (2007′s Wireless and 2008′s Alarm Clock, Snooze Bar, Get Up) they have decided to go the distance on this new record and make a full-length LP. Alarm Clock told a day in the life story of an urban 20-something, and Like Track Stars expands on the idea of a concept album to follow the arc of a relationship, from a first date through breaking up and moving on.

After the non-stop action of their first two EPs, Like Track Stars shows the maturity of BBB. A true concept album, Like Track Stars charts the arc of a typical relationship through a 9 song journey. From the excitement and nervousness at the beginning (“Rock” and “Freak You Out”) to the inevitable lull in the middle (“Don’t Forget” and “Like Track Stars”) and the let down at the end (“Rewrite The Scenes”) BBB keeps the beat going with their infectious electro-rock. Somehow amidst the telling of the story BBB even manages to incorporate a cover of The Cure’s “Letter To Elise” and make it fit perfectly with the rest of the album.

Like Track Stars showcases BBB’s now fully formed sound. Through the first two EPs BBB’s sound seemed to be still exploring the electro side of electro-rock. Now on Like Track Stars BBB have figured out how to make electronic music that rocks! Sean’s masterful arrangements are beautifully executed by the trio of talented musicians. Alexa shines on her recorded debut with BBB after a year of playing in the live show, adding sweet harmonies throughout the album and duets on “Rewrite The Scenes” and the title track. The record is perfectly mixed by Nic Hard who also contributes the remix of “Freak You Out” that appears on the album. Dave Liang (Shanghai Restoration Project) rounds out the record with a great remix of “Rock” closing out the stellar 11 track LP. BBB have really hit the mark with this one and have made the leap from a pop fascination to a real powerhouse talent.
