Artist: The American Analog Set
Title: Hard to Find: Singles and Unreleased 2000-2005
Label: Hometown Fantasy
Genre: Indie : Alternative
Release Date: 4.17.09
UPC: 844185053983
Territories: World

There’s something to be said for simplicity in the growing and evermore competitive indie rock scene. While the term “indie” may have truly stood for independent in the early 90′s with bands such as Sunny Day Real Estate and Built To Spill, the movement has expanded to a full blown genre with as many aspiring amateurs as hair metal had in 1987. With each band trying to “out-indie” their competition for the growing legions of listeners, too many tricks and angles have been played, causing the music to feel over-done and resulting in songs that don’t know what they wanted to do in the first place.

The American Analog Set is a fantastic reminder of the best parts of indie rock: simplicity and emotion, moods and textures, tones and colors which add up to a personal and genuine feeling sound. Without relying on parlor tricks purchased at Guitar Center to give your songs some edge, the 4-piece AmAnSet have found their way into numerous hearts as individuals apply their beautiful, low-key songs to their own personal experiences. This is the soundtrack for summer afternoons, late night drives, and those hazy mornings after you’ve stayed up the whole night with your friends for no particular reason (oh high school….).  Think Pinback’s gentle disposition, a touch of My Bloody Valentine’s walls of fuzz and soft vocals, American Football’s enchanting, gliding, and climbing guitar lines, and maybe some of Death Cab’s earlier material. Steady tempos, simple but effective, ground the band’s overall sound.

Based in Austin, Texas, the group formed in 1995. Their early material often featuring long instrumental passages, but over time their songs became shorter and more pop-influenced. The band has released six full-length albums, four EP’s, and several vinyl singles which have become widely known as staples of indie rock. In 2002, lead vocal and guitarist Andrew Kenny decided to try and head back to school in New York, which put the band on a slight pause causing rumors of their breakup to circulate. After a year, Ken decided school was not where his heart was and began to focus more of his energy on The Set. After a massive tour of the UK, Europe, and the US in summer 2003, AnAmSet released their latest album, 2005′s Set Free, was released in North America by Canadian record label Arts & Crafts (Broken Social Scene, Stars, Feist). Later that year, rumors once again began spreading across the Internet that the group was on the verge of disbanding. The band quickly refuted such rumors, but added that they may not tour again due to their obligations with other projects, leaving their numerous fans in a state of limbo, unsure if they should morn the loss or prepare for a length wait to see them again.

Just in time, the Set have released Hard to Find: Singles and Unreleased 2000-2005, a compilation of unreleased and previously vinyl only releases from those years. On top of having a wicked cool cover, the album is a fantastic sampler for someone unfamiliar with the band’s material as it spans a lengthy and important time in the group’s run. Eclectic and personal, Hard to Find takes its listener into the world of AmAnSet’s tasteful indie rock. The Album’s opener, “Stoney Chariots,” gently floats you along the warm blanket of ambient fuzz that coats the whole song.”New Equation” features an electric piano that throws you into the corner chair in a suave, downtown lounge. The narrative “Make It Take It” has something (maybe the synth’s joyous voicings) that seems to capture the fleeting, youthful joy that one only encounters on warm afternoons in their adolescence. And that’s only the first three songs. The album is varied in mood, tone, and texture, but grounded in the Set’s low-key sensibilities and genuine songwriting; this feels personal the way any great indie record should (think of Sunny Day’s Diary as the end-all of intimate indie records). For fans of the American Analog Set, someone looking to become familiar with them, or anyone searching for a genuine indie experience, Hard to Find is a must. Pair it with their Through the 1990s: Singles and Unreleased for a full-course tasting! The band also played at this year’s SXSW festival in their native Austin. Keep your fingers crossed for tour dates.
