Dan Willson’s songwriting is the result of a long and personal journey, filled with ups and downs, which lead him to the acclaimed set of songs on his debut record Good News. Under the moniker Withered Hand, Willson crafted a landmark recording of quality songsmanship which walks the fine line between frailty and strength with nimble grace. The album was released in the UK in late 2009 and without any coordinated publicity or promotional effort, yet it managed to find acclaim in multiple outlets. MOJO magazine gave it a prominent 4 star review only months after its release and the record eventually achieved regular BBC airplay from prominent DJ’s, leading to live session performances for BBC Radio Scotland and BBC 6Music. The band has garnered public endorsements from Jarvis Cocker, The Dodos, and fellow Scots, Frightened Rabbit, whose frontman Scott Hutchinson is planning to take Withered Hand as their primary support on an upcoming US tour. In the last year Withered Hand has enjoyed a highly successful European tour with sold out shows in London and Scotland and numerous festival invitations. All this fuss over a debut album was really something to talk about, and it was only a matter of time before Absolutely Kosher picked the record up to release in the western hemisphere. Now, for the first time in the US, Good News is available, and destined for further acclaim.

luaka bop logo 253x300 Featured Label: Luaka BopThis year marks the 21st anniversary of eclectic world music infused label Luaka Bop. Founded by Talking Heads creator David Byrne as a vehicle for his popular Brazilian pop compilations, Luaka Bop has become a pinnacle of world music success. To celebrate this anniversary they’ve released a retrospective complilation featuring many of their famed artists titled Twenty First Century Twenty First Year.

In 1990 Luaka Bop’s Brazilian compilations had brought in enough attention that Byrne decided to hire Icon Records’ Yale Evelev to run his budding label. The pair launched the label into the previously unexposed world of Cuban music, and began signing individual artists from all over, starting with Tom Zè and including such greats as Zap Mama, Cornershop, Os Mutantes, Susana Baca,  Jim White and Geggy Tah.

Originally a part of Byrne’s broader deal with Warner Bros. Records, Luaka Bop also passed through the hands of Virgin Records and V2 before becoming it’s own entity officially in 2007. How fitting that as these major labels merge and crumble Luaka Bop continues to blaze new paths and bring us eclectic sounds from around the globe.

“I believe the artists on Luaka Bop are completely in touch with exactly what is happening in the world today. The world is gloriously impure, and yet each of their mixtures has its own strong flavor and sense of itself as unique. There is no danger, from our folks, of an impending global mush, of a cultural watering down.” — David Byrne

“Now 21 years and many distribution deals later the indie music world has moved more towards what Luaka Bop does. So what a great time in the early part of the 21st Century to celebrate the 21 years of this label.” — Tom Zè

The Phenomenal Handclap Band Praised by Sir Paul McCartney

paul mccartney letter 150x150 The Phenomenal Handclap Band Praised by Sir Paul McCartneyThe list of fans for the NYC based collective just got one longer. Sir Paul McCartney himself sent his praise via letter after BBC Radio 1’s DJ Zane Lowe played PHB’s newest hit single “15 to 20″ on his show.  PHB’s label Friendly Fire recounts the story:

“A short while ago BBC Radio 1 in the UK played PHB’s summertime jam “15 to 20″ and none other than Sir Paul McCartney rang up the station to find out what they were playing. Word immediately got back to our camp that he was a fan and a cd was sent along to him post-haste. Being the classy guy he is he sent along a thank you letter.”

Click the thumbnail to see a full sized copy of Paul’s letter.   We’ve got a track from the band’s forthcoming debut below, and you can hear more at the band’s Myspace page. The Phenomenal Handclap Band comes out June 23rd on Friendly Fire Recordings — we’ll have a full review up here shortly.
