Review: Tobacco

Friday, June 19th, 2009

By: Mike Madavi
tobacco Review: Tobacco

Artist: Tobacco
Title: The Allegheny White Fish Tapes
Label: Rad Cult
Genre: Lo-Fi : Noise
Release Date: 7/7/09
UPC: 643157404750
Territory: World

The Allegheny White Fish Tapes is a collection of Black Moth Super Rainbow front man Tobacco’s (Tom Fec) recordings from high school. All home made and recorded between 1996-1999 on 4-track cassette, this collection assembles many unheard tracks from the pre-BMSR and satanstompingcaterpillars days. While obviously not quite to par with his more contemporary work, Fish Tapes should be considered within its proper context: these are recordings Tobacco made in high school on a 4 track, yet they still showcase his incredible ear for hooks and melodies while providing BMSR fans with a document in the band’s history, helping illustrate the creative process he underwent to achieve the sound they love today.

The foundations of Tobacco’s later sound are lucidly observable in this record. There is a clear element of lo-fi, analog goodness mixed with the infant workings of what would become the banging beats on records like 2008’s critically acclaimed Fucked Up Friends. You can hear the psychedelic saplings of BMSR’s dreamy analog haze on tracks like “Too Weird to be a Tree.” His experimentation is not only interesting but yields cool results such as “Gonnna Git You Brainwashed” which sounds like some horrifying Aphex Twin demo. Some of the most personal and youthful movements come in his softer, acoustic recordings of simple melodies and sweet chord progressions (check out “The Blue Seahorse”). It’s these tender, private recordings that make early demo albums like this so great: the songs sound like youthful experimentation with songwriting when one doesn’t feel any pressure to achieve anything with a track, simply recording it because it’s pleasing to do so. One particularly interesting track is “Eating Butterflies;” Tobacco has stated in interviews the first instrument he learned was the guitar, working primarily off of Smashing Pumpkins’ tablature. Compare his early track with Siamese Dream and you can really hear the influence on pounding, super-distorted guitar riffs and aggressive drumming ala Jimmy Chamberlin.

Overall the album has primitive analog recording a-plenty and fun, simple songs that document the genius on the horizon, The Allegheny White Fish Tapes is a must have for Black Moth fans, Tobacco fans, or anyone seeking out some cool bedroom recordings.

Moondagger expands upon the positive electro-pop of Keepers with the addition of a full band. Thankfully, the prolific Chabot still seems blissfully unaware of his music’s genreless-ness. Thick, atmospheric production obscures bright melodies; ecstatic synth squiggles dance around new-wave beats; arrangement ideas bounce off one another within ambitious song structures that swerve left, then right, then left again.

Cult favorites Black Moth Super Rainbow return with a fantastic, psychedelic new album for your day tripping pleasure. Their newest release, Eating Us, showcases a finer tuned and produced sound that still remains loyal to their analog-powered experimental indie rock foundation. This album is a sonic journey through the strange yet inviting world of BMSR’s reclusive members: Tobacco, The Seven Fields of Aphelion, Power Pill Fist, Iffernaut, and Father Hummingbird. It’s refreshing and enticing to hear synthesizers and various analog electronic instruments used in music that isn’t dance orientated. This feels undeniably like French down tempo electronic gods, Air (and that’s a good thing). With soft, wispy vocals processed through a vocoder (think Moon Safari) and a fluid mix of electronic noise and sampling with proper physical instruments (heavy Rhodes piano use), the comparison is unavoidable. This in itself should be taken as positive, after all, who else can achieve Air’s unique sound (and skillfully I might add)?

Despite the similarities, don’t write this off as another Air. Black Moth’s music is far more psychedelically orientated than the French duo. The band has stated that their musical goal is to turn childhood memories into songs. This applies: BMSR goes for more textures, tones and moods (sort of like the soundtrack to a peaceful Pennsylvanian woodland drive or sunny day on the beach) rather than distinct melodies. Most of the songs on Eating Us could pair well with peaceful, surreal moments in a listener’s life; “Twin of Myself” is recommended for any pleasure drives you’re planning and “Gold Splatter” for nighttime activity. Nothing sudden and abrasive here: even the darkest moments on the album still feel fluid and thoughtfully stitched together to create an overall, blanketing mood. Another big plus for Eating Us is the production value is incredible; this album is mixed and leveled perfectly as this is their first proper studio release. Every track on each song is in its right place. My advice is to get someplace comfortable (the beach, the passenger seat, ect) and let the album float you along its narrative.

Here’s Graveface Record’s short bio on the group:

“The modern musical unit known as Black Moth Super Rainbow first emerged from an obscure Pennsylvania forest glen in 2003 to relay a somewhat confounding sound with Falling Through a Field. Over the next few years, that peculiar sound developed, and the cult of BMSR began. With the release of their naturally-sweetened, candy-coated, and acclaimed 2007 treat, Dandelion Gum, a number of curious listeners bent their ears and adjusted their listening habits to incorporate Black Moth Super Rainbow’s oddly creepy and off-beat sweet audio plyings. A string of tours supporting big brothers Flaming Lips and Aesop Rock positioned the oft-camera shy outfit in front of thousands of brand new sonically adventurous music enthusiasts who weren’t necessarily prepared for the eccentric visuals of BMSR’s surreal live show, but would hopefully emerge changed, and be better off for it.”

Fans of Air will love this release, as will anyone looking for a unique, psychedelic sound. Very groovy.

-Pattern is Movement opening for St. Vincent

On Pattern:

“Their music is best described as modular, building complete songs from sub-units of melody and beat. The result is out there, but it doesn’t seem pretentious because of the giddy singlemindedness with which the band attacks the concept…It takes special musicians to make a sound like this work, but three LPs into their career, Thiboldeaux and Ward seem to have it figured out, creating an accessible album that nonetheless sounds unlike anything any other band is doing…7.9″ -Pitchfork

-Here We Go Magic opening for Grizzly Bear

On Here We Go Magic’s song “Tunnelvision”:

“Rarely have a band name and a song title both been so appropriately chosen: In ‘Tunnelvision,’ Luke Temple’s new project Here We Go Magic quickly establishes that nothing is as it seems. Anyone coming in cold, not knowing about Temple’s involvement, would assume that the voice repeating the words ‘Tunnelvision / Strange decision’ is a woman, for one thing. At the same time, it’s hard not to get lost in Here We Go Magic’s guitars, which provide a steady pulse at the same time they drench the song in reverb and delay. By roughly the three-minute mark — around the time Temple sings, ‘Anything is possible’ – ‘Tunnelvision’ has become engrossing to the point of hypnosis. Which, given the band’s name, makes a lot of sense” – NPR’s Song of the Day
