Pink Martini, Kode9, Why? & Others Come Together For Japan Relief Efforts

Friday, March 25th, 2011

redcross Pink Martini, Kode9, Why? & Others Come Together For Japan Relief EffortsMany musicians are using their creative talents to aid Japan earthquake & tsunami relief efforts. Among the many generous efforts are some notable ones by IODA-distributed artists Pink Martini, Frightened Rabbit, Why? & Kode9.

Pink Martini is headlining a benefit concert in their home Portland, OR. The benefit is being called “FROM OREGON, WITH LOVE; A Benefit Concert For The Mercy Corps Oregon/Japan Relief Fund,” and will feature: Pink Martini, Israel Nebeker of Blind Pilot, Holcombe Waller and many more talented performers. It is taking place Sunday, March 27 at the Aladdin Theater.

Anticon experimental hip-hoppers Why? are auctioning off a whole bunch of rare LPs from Why?, as well as cLOUDDEAD and Hymie’s Basement, over at band member Josiah Wolf’s eBay page; all proceeds from the auction will go to supporting Hands on Tokyo.

Frightened Rabbit’s Scott Hutchison will headline the Red Cross Fundraiser for Japan in Glasgow, Scotland at Stereo on March 30th.

Hyperdub head Kode9 is among some of the many contributors featured on the Nihon Kizuna compilation, which is available now for purchase on Bandcamp and iTunes Japan. The proceeds will go towards supporting the Japan Red Cross.

We urge all who are able to support the relief efforts in whatever way possible. Our thoughts are with the people of Japan as they continue to cope with this catastrophic disaster.

Robin Rogers, winner of the 2009 “Best Female Artist” Blues Blast Award, was featured on NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturday program this past Saturday. The Charlotte, North Carolina-based singer and harmonica player was diagnosed with inoperable liver cancer in August, just one month before the release of her latest album, Back In The Fire, on Blind Pig Records. Back in the Fire debuted at #3 on the Billboard Blues Chart which is based on sales figures, reached #1 on the Blues Chart of the Roots Music Report, which means it was the most played album in the country that week on blues radio, and has stayed in the Top five on that chart since its release. On Back in the Fire Rogers reveals herself as an accomplished singer and harmonica player of rare polish and originality. Robin has with a deeply expressive and soulful voice and an infectious enthusiasm for the blues. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette added, “Rogers has a voice that will break your heart with the blues, even if you don’t think you have one. She’s a soulful, bluesy, torchy singer who works a lyric with painful feelings of sorrow  and joy. And she plays a moaning, mournful harp. It’s wonderful.”

Since the announcement of her medical condition there has been an outpouring of support from fans and the blues community around the country.  Benefit concerts and fundraisers have been held in Colorado, Washington, New York, Michigan, New Jersey, and North Carolina to raise funds for Robin and her husband and music collaborator Tony, who depend on touring for their income.   The Charlotte Blues Society has also set up a PayPal account on her behalf, with all the proceeds going directly to the singer.  PayPal donations can be made on the following page of the Society’s website: PayPal.

And be sure to check out the NPR feature on their website.

Artist: John Heart Jackie
Title: We Are Gold Mounds
Label: Pour Le Sport
Genre: Folk : Folk-Rock
UPC: 751937394228
Territory: World
Release Date: 08.03.10

John Heart Jackie is Jennie Wayne (voice, guitars, pianos, mountain dulcimer, accordion, tambourine) & Peter Murray (voice, guitars, bass, pianos, percussion, auto harp, melodic). The duo’s track, “You’ve Been On My Mind,” off of their debut full-length We Are Gold Mounds, has been featured as NPR’s Song of the Day today! The group had some help recording their new record from some other Portland, Oregon natives including members of Blind Pilot and Pink Martini, who Peter handles PR for. NPR describes their sound as, “full of languidly folky pop songs that maximize the effect of Peter Murray and Jennie Wayne’s sweet vocal interplay.” Their earlier record, an acoustic EP entitled Women and Money, was also featured on All Songs Considered. This is a group to keep an eye on!

Blind Pilot Touring with Decemberists

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Well this is huge!  IODA’s own Blind Pilot will be opening for Portland brethren The Decemberists on their upcoming tour.  We like to think it’s that killer slot at IODA’s recent SXSW party that clinched this, but you know, it could also be that Blind Pilot is just a super awesome band.  Full dates here, and here’s a video for the track “Go On Say It”:
