The latest Danish export to throw something new into your musical rotation is Choir of Young Believers, an extremely unique and passionate project headed by Jannis Noya Makrigiannis, a 26-year old member of the Copenhagen indie scene.

From Ghostly International:
“When listening to Denmark’s Choir of Young Believers, it’s hard not to imagine an army of white-clad singers with arms outstretched, their voices raised in holy polyphony. After the breakup of his old band in 2006, Makrigiannis moved to the Greek island of Samos and began developing his own solo material. Jannis returned to Copenhagen and, gathering musicians and friends around him, formed Choir of Young Believers, an orchestral-pop project marked by magisterial melodies, dark lyrical concerns, and a healthy dose of cathedral-grade reverb.
The songs on Choir of Young Believers’ debut album This Is for the White in Your Eyes mix modest folk arrangements with ambitious, grandiose indie pop, cooled with a stoic Nordic distance and glowing with an inner light. Musical nods to Roy Orbison, The Beach Boys, Pixies, and Hank Williams abound, but Jannis and his Choir of Young Believers have forged their own neck-tinglingly singular sound. Live, the Choir takes many different shapes and sizes. Jannis often performs as a duo with a guitar or a piano and cello; other times, up to eight people fill the stage, playing everything from strings and horns to percussion and bells. The one constant is Jannis’ voice: clear, mournful, stretching to the heavens.”

An honest and accurate description if we may say so! His church-reverberated sound invokes cinematic sequences of passionate intensity. It’s very appropriate he called his group a “Choir,” because the overall effect is a drawing in of the listener, pulling them towards some personal experience that’s based around Makrigiannis’s voice, but delivered by a group of voices which have the effect of an omnipresent musical congregation. A definite up-and-comer, the future looks very bright for this young talent as his singles, EP’s, and preliminary singles have harbored serious press from indie-review outlets from all corners of the music publication universe (Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Under the Radar, NPR, MOJO, Magnet, the list goes on). If you’ve been looking for something unique and powerful to move you, search no more.

Taking a cue from progressive artists like Gnarls Barkley, Santigold, Gwen Stefani, Aesop Rock, Janelle Monae, and Kanye West, ApSci blend elements from electronica, pop, hip-hop and R&B into a quirky electro-pop that has appeal to everyone from mainstream listeners to underground heads. If this is the next generation of pop music, ApSci can only be considered one of its brightest new faces.

ZAZA has already been met with praise from the NY press making favorable comparisons British dream-rock acts like Ride, Slowdive, and Cocteau Twins but to pigeonhole them as a 90s throwback would be a mistake as their debut EP radiates a mystical, otherworldly element that both challenges the listener, while at the same time inviting them in.

Snow-flecked mountaintops, deserted city streets, a final kiss between estranged lovers- this is the emotional terrain trod by Jannis Joya Makrigiannis and his Choir of Young Believers. “This Is for the White in Your Eyes” is an album of orchestral indie-pop, but its artistic scope extends beyond melody and harmony: Choir of Young Believers paint cinematic tableaux, with Jannis cast as the silvery-voiced narrator.

This is for the White in Your Eyes, the debut from Danish collective, Choir of Young Believers, is now streaming in its entirety on NPR Music.  The album is now available for sale on Amazon and will be available everywhere else next week.

“Choir of Young Believers is led by 26-year-old Danish singer Jannis Noya Makrigiannis, who works with a rotating cast of supporting players: Sometimes, the band is a duo; at other times, it’s an octet, or somewhere in between. Give a listen to This Is for the White in Your Eyes, and you’ll hear the inspiration of Radiohead and The Beach Boys, as well as a few surprises along the way. The disc’s opening track, “Hollow Talk,” is one of my favorite ways to start an album that I’ve heard all year.” -Bob Boilen

Choir of Young Believers, Phenomenal Handclap and Apsci on NPR’s All Songs Considered

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Ok, so maybe this is old news to y’all, but we were delighted to find out out that Bob Boilen’s really rounded up a nice ‘half-way through 2009′ mix of new releases on a recent NPR All Songs Considered, including Ghostly’s new signing, Denmark’s Choir of Young Believers, Paul McCartney’s fave new band, The Phenomenal Handclap Band, and Quannum Projects’ dynamic duo, Apsci.

Check out Apsci‘s iphone-tastic new video for “Under Control”. From Wired:  “LaMotta and Diaz-Tutaan made the video using nothing but their iPhone, a portable printer and a webcam. They performed the track in front of the webcam and printed it up into the handheld snapshots that fly by in the globe-hopping video, which hopscotches from Brooklyn to the Grand Canyon, Vegas, Hawaii and Australia at the speed of sound. They took additional shots using the iPhone, then mashed the production nightmare into an eye-tripping visual for their body-rocking song.”
