Deer Tick’s sophomore LP came out one week ago today and the coverage on this album is solid! Check out the leading man, John McCauley III, describe his favorite record in under 45 seconds, be called “indie as it gets, like shoplifting from American Apparel” and performing at KEXP in Seattle:

The promising alt-country quartet Deer Tick has returned with their second full-length album: Born on Flag Day. As the follow-up to 2007’s highly successful debut, War Elephant, the new record showcases the group’s evolution as songwriters and pleasantly produces a strong step forward for the band. While it is important to note that the group is a four piece, it’s undeniable that the band’s frontman, John Joseph McCauley III, is the nucleus that the project has revolved around since its humble beginnings as a Hank Williams inspired two-man group. McCauley’s distinct voice, gritty and nasally with an excellent snarl that rivals Liam Gallagher’s, pretty much defines the band and is the root reason why Deer Tick stands out amongst a seemingly interminable lineup of young guns seeking to find a memorable place in the roots rock and alt-country revival. Born on Flag Day has a much more filled-out sound that backs up McCauley’s voice more than adequately; this is a real band now.

Listeners may initially find McCauley’s voice distracting but if you let yourself believe in the southern drawl he throws around you’ll be surprised to find he does it very well. These new songs sound closer to the classics that inspired him to begin writing this type of folk-based rock in the first place. The indie crowd won’t find his vocal stylings that far off from Neutral Milk Hotel’s reclusive Jeff Mangum, but just picture him drinking whiskey and smoking cigarettes in blue-blockers (got it?). His guitar work is chickin-pickin’ based fingerstyle that travels around classic blues and folk shapings and patterns; it pairs very well with his voice, creating a pretty damn authentic southern sound. McCauley sought out a proper band after recording War Elephant to round out the new record. Playing with several incarnations over the years with help from all sorts of talent (Dirty Projectors drummer Brian McOmber, New Hampshire bassist and songwriter Nat Baldwin, Spencer Kingman of Spenking), McCauley found himself in love with the stylings of Pawtucket, Rhode Island drummer Dennis Michael Ryan, who not only provides some fantastic brush-work but also harmonizes skillfully with McCauley’s unmistakable voice. Dennis’ half-brother, Christopher Dale Ryan takes on bass duty, playing both electric and (left-handed!) upright, while contributing his musical knowledge (he graduated from Providence College) to the group. Christopher’s roommate and axe-man Andrew Grant Tobiassen was hired to complete the group and add some quality electric lead to McCauley’s songs. This incarnation was not present in the War Elephant recordings, but thankfully came together just before Deer Tick re-entered the studio to record Flag Day; the positive results are evident.

The album’s opener and first single, “Easy” is a great example of Deer Tick’s general sound and mystique: young but road-hardened rebels with sensitive kindness housed within their rough whiskey-stained, cigarette-reeking shell. “Little White Lies” has classic southern slide guitar, minimal drumming, and a horse-trotting bass line to back their octave harmonies. “Friday XIII” will satisfy The Devil Makes Three crowd with McCauley’s voice thrown in a reverberated corner and female-response vocals. “The Ghost” is a slow, campfire number with nice harmonica work and sits as one of the best songs on the record (this is a clear sign of their improvements made over War Elephant as the four piece achieves a much more authentic sound); the melodies really shine! “Stung” is a sweet and sensitive sunset for the album to close on (don’t let its 11:02 run time psych you out; he finishes with a hidden live recording of Leadbelly’s “Goodnight, Irene”). This record serves as a hopeful sign that the youth still can create fantastic and authentic southern-based music, even if they come from Rhode Island.

A great album for fans of Conor Oberst’s folk-rock kick or anyone searching for a talented new alt-country band to follow.
