Brighton, England’s Fat Cat Records have grown from a humble record store to an indie music powerhouse that carries some of today’s finest artists in a eclectic and high quality lineup. The label originally began in as a record store in Crawley, West Sussex in 1989, founded by Alex Knight and Dave Cawley. After saving up, the store moved to central London in 1990, where it found a niche specializing in Detroit and Chicago-based techno and house, which was hard to come by in those parts. In 1997 they made the leap from selling records to making records, as the store closed and the label was born, initially releasing dance and electronic 12’’s. Today, it rests in Brighton and has earned a reputation as a top notch English label, boasting an amazing lineup that includes all forms of electronic music, some post rock, indie rock, noise, and pop-punk. They’ve also got a real eye for talent, as the label is credited with discovering such critically-adored acts as Sigur Ros, Animal Collective, Frightened Rabbit, The Twilight Sad, Múm, No Age, Vetiver, and We Were Promised Jetpacks. Another really cool program the label handles is Furballs, a bi-monthly live music event in Brighton which is a must-see if you’re traveling there during one. The label is currently run by Adam Pierce, who also plays in Mice Parade, a Fat Cat staple.
We spoke to Anna Bond, Fat Cat’s Label Manager and Adam’s right-hand lady, about what it’s like working for the label. Check out her responses and grab some free Promotracks after the jump!

Meredith Godreau’s Gregory & The Hawk is a true example of how to succeed in independent music within today’s digital market. She has humble beginnings, as all good bands do, and worked hard while utilizing social media outlets to augment her exposure through performances. In fact, the first time Godreau recorded a full-length, it was in her own bedroom in 2006. Her pop-sensible indie tunes caught on with the blogosphere in a variety of places online, causing her debut self-produced record to become an internet sensation, eventually selling tens of thousands of digital copies of her single overnight.
With such success stemming from true DIY beginnings, imagine what the luxury of a proper recording journey backed by a prestigious label will yield. Fat Cat Records (a house favorite here at IODA) signed Godreau after seeing her play in New York and put out her follow-up, Moenie and Kitchi, which she recorded with a host of collaborators. She then toured to support the record along with indie’s top acts including Múm, Frightened Rabbit, Mice Parade, and Album Leaf. Now, Meredith Godreau returns with Gregory & The Hawk’s third full-length album, Leche, released once again on the auspicious Fat Cat Records.
In a way, Leche is a return to Gregory & The Hawk’s humble beginnings; a return to the bedroom if you will. On the new record, Godreau elects to lay down a more stripped-down, simplistic set of recordings rather than layers of production and space. The result is an album of raw honesty that highlights her stunning voice, gifted songwriting, and innovation, all without restriction. However, the songs are still complemented by the harps, guitars, and creepy sonic knick-knacks that have found their way in as a supporting cast.
While her songs remain pleasing to the ear, it is important to distinguish that this is not pop music. Leche demonstrates the distance Godreau has travelled from the gentle, hook-centric simplicity of her earlier material, but her peerless grasp of head-bobbing rhythms, ear-piquing hooks, and otherworldly, punctuating noise snippets clearly remains — keeping the listener humming along through even the darker bits of her latest effort.
With such quality, honest songwriting from a beloved indie success story, this is sure to take the blogosphere by storm. Take a listen to the free promotrack below and pick up Gregory & The Hawk’s newest release Leche today.

Awesome Scottish indie rock band We Were Promised Jetpacks had the pleasure of playing the Daytrotter Sessions this week. The band is made up of Adam Thompson, Michael Palmer, Sean Smith and Darren Lackie. During the session, they played songs off their album These Four Walls. From Daytrotter: “The band [...] makes its music feel as if there’s nothing like a good catharsis, something to jar the system – as if the smelling salts had been brought out and, suddenly, things are different. There’s nothing quite like getting those personal injustices off of a chest, just rearing back and letting loose with some pent up rustling, trying to push the moon further back in the sky by a couple hundred feet. It’s an emotional stream of thought that [singer] Thompson taps into and his bandmates execute, bringing to life all of the feelings that were already feeling very lively within them, hurting them a bit as they simmered and grew into meaningful assignments of blame. There’s a desire and a yearning on the group’s last full-length, These Four Walls, that want for just a little something more, any kind of replacement of the stagnancy for something that’s charged, something that’s a bit scary. It’s a plea for youth again and it’s a plea for such things that make us choke on our breaths again, anything that will get us worked up.” Listen to their session here.
Daytrotter is known for selecting unique and impressive artists, so this is quite an accomplishment for Jetpacks. They now join the ranks of fellow IODA artists that have played on the Daytrotter Sessions such as Frightened Rabbit, J. Tillman, Alela Diane, Brother Ali, Deastro, Andrew W.K., Christopher Denny, David Karsten Daniels, Sean Hayes, The Papercuts, Nina Nastasia and more.

Frightened Rabbit are taking the US by storm with their latest record The Winter of Mixed Drinks, playing the single “Nothing Like You” on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon last night. It marked their US television debut and added a nice punctuation to their recently completed US headlining tour. Apparently The Roots Drummer/Late Night bandleader Amir “?uestlove” Thompson loved the performance on Fallon tweeting “man @FRabbits are great!!!!” yesterday from his official Twitter account. Congrats to the guys and to Fat Cat Records for their continued success!
