The New York Times Hearts IODA Artists at SXSW!

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

The New York Times’ Art Beat section recently reviewed a series of performances at this year’s SXSW festival in Austin, and it seems our beloved IODA artists made quite an impression on them! Here’s a list of some of the artists and what Art Beat had to say about their performances (some of the quotes come from a feature they do called the “four word review;” it’s easy to guess which ones):

Frightened Rabbit: “Frightened Rabbit–singular noun, full band–devotes itself to hangdog anthems. Its stage patter was so unassuming that the band’s lead singer, Scott Hutchison, insisted the group had been outplayed by an opening act, We Were Promised Jetpacks. But the music contradicted that humility.” – Jon Pareles

Hauschka: “Hauschka … builds his repeating structures with a Romantic ear — pensive minor chords, inviting melodic lines, slow-cresting dynamics — and, sometimes, a foundation of rock rhythm. Even with their echoes of Philip Glass, the pieces were ingenious and exquisite.” – Jon Pareles

Still Life Still: “…just when we were about to get back to work, Still Life Still kicked in. The band’s set was full of time shifts, sudden vocals and minor chords, but managed to make obtuse angles fit together almost sweetly. We stayed. The world and its petty needs would have to wait.” – David Carr

Broken Social Scene: “… Emily Haines of Metric wandered onstage in a gray hoodie, along with her bandmate James Shaw, to knock down a version of “Anthems for a 17 Year Old Girl.” Oddly enough, the addition of yet even more people seemed to solve the math and steady the presentation. By the end, people were even dancing.” – David Carr

Thee Oh Sees: “Thee Oh Sees have the propulsion of punk and the whirl of psychedelia, and the foursome … drew a few hundred people. A few hundred very enthusiastic people … the vibe was far more chummy than polished. The group performed in a tight knot with the audience clustered inches around it. There was a mosh pit and even some crowd-surfing. At times the dancing was so hard the bridge shook.” – Melena Ryzik

Real Estate: “Rollin’ downriver, beery haze.” – Ben Sisario

Warpaint: “They start out airborne, with high rippling chords and pinging patterns; soon one of the women starts singing a line or two that becomes an incantation, usually about a tense relationship: “All the time it took you to get yourself straight,” one chides. And then the drums kick in, the bass dives down and Warpaint turns downright funky while the guitars still float. First they hypnotize; then they get you dancing.” – Jon Pareles

If Frightened Rabbit aren’t careful all of the critical praise they’re getting might go to their head. Though they were formed in only 2003 as a solo project of rhythm guitarist, vocalist and lyricist Scott Hutchison (now with 4 other members), their previous two records have already cemented them as a staple in the Scottish indie rock scene. Now with the release of their third full length LP, The Winter of Mixed Drinks, Frightened Rabbit is set to make the leap into mainstream recognition for their unique blend of impassioned indie-folk crossover.

After causing quite a stir in the blogosphere with their 2008 record The Midnight Organ Fight (9/10 on Drowned in Sound and an 8.1/10 on Pitchfork), the group extensively toured the US and UK, even supporting Death Cab for Cutie during their November 2008 UK & Ireland tour. While the previous release was clearly about the end of a relationship and its accompanying heartbreak, Rabbit’s new album looks forward. Hutchison explains: “the theme I’m going for is pushing yourself out to the edge of things and being alone, feeling lost and not knowing where you are, which is how I’ve felt recently. It’s not all fun and games, but hopefully it’ll just be less obviously personal and brutal than the last record. Less oppressive.” In this attempt he both fails an succeeds: Mixed Drinks is indeed less brutal and pain-ridden than Organ Fight, but there’s definitely no lack of emotion found. Instead, the record is fueled by energetic passion that keeps you swooning and tingling in euphoria with its freight-train drum beats, masculine vulnerability, and incessantly uplifting melodies.

The term epic can be applied selectively to music that invokes a seriously formidable and attention-locking presence, but it arrives in different incarnations and is achieved through different means. Frightened Rabbit’s particular blend of epic is derived almost exclusively from pure emotion: this is a full on cathartic release of tellingly personal issues through music that makes you want to scream from mountain tops, drink yourself crazy, dance as hard as you can, all at the same time. No song has a lull or seemingly forced moment; instead, the five-piece masterfully builds songs up and delivers powerful moments ribboned with heartbreaking honesty. These sound like pub atmosphere sing-alongs for misanthropes, too young to really connect with the old standards but still feeling the same tensions in their bodies as their fathers felt before them. In short, it feels young and honest without being adolescent. Rather Frightened Rabbit’s new album finds a home with those in a similar position to themselves: just as they teeter on the edge of mainstream recognition and a whole new world ahead of them as one of today’s most talented young acts, many young adults experiencing the same feelings of fear mixed with excitement as they leave the relative safety of youth will find a comforting shoulder here.

This is a band that demands attention and continues to rake in critical praise with each step they take. Be sure to grab a copy of The Winter of Mixed Drinks and hear Scotland’s best export since Belle and Sebastian.

The Black Angels are a psychedelic rock band from Austin, Texas, formed in May 2004. Their name derives from the Velvet Underground song “The Black Angel’s Death Song”. Having played at Lollapalooza, SXSW, and All Tomorrow’s Parties, the group has gained much critical praise for their dark, psych-rock. Resurrecting the dark, drone style of the 60′s and blending it with southern rock, The Angels have an authentic sound that’s rarely heard today.

Securing praise from Thom Yorke, Santana, Robert Plant, Bono, Coldplay, Tinariwen are guitar-poets from the southern Sahara desert. They are icons of freedom and resistance among their own people, the nomadic Touareg of the Sahara. The group was founded at the end of the 1970s, during a period of great suffering in the desert, due to the catastrophic droughts of the early 1970s that decimated the animal herds and almost destroyed the Touareg’s ancient nomadic way of life. Tinariwen began to write songs describing the pain of exile, the longing for lost homes and families, the struggle for political and cultural freedom, and the rigors of everyday life in the desert. Transposing the traditional melodies of the Touareg on the electric guitar then mixing them with blues, rock, pop, Berber and Arabic influences, Tinariwen created a modern desert rock sound. In the early 1980s, the were  lured into rebel training camps in Libya by Colonel Gadaffi, becoming the official mouthpiece of the Touareg rebellion in northern Mali and Niger, which all the founding members of the group took part in. Now with three successful albums released, including the latest Aman Iman, numerous tours of Europe, USA and the Far East, appearances at the most prestigious festivals and a BBC Award for World Music, Tinariwen have emerged as a prolific and truly special musical group. Haunted indie-folk with moments of real urgency and a Pixie-esque dynamic range that can take you from hushed to majestic and back again in seconds flat. And they’re from Scotland, so the accent is a nice touch. Rabbit took the blogosphere by storm on the strength of 2006′s Sing the Greys then kicked it up a notch in April with The Midnight Organ Fight, hailed by Nicholas Harmer of Death Cab for Cutie as his favorite album of 2008.

The mysterious and talented Burial is an English dubstep producer. His eponymous debut album was released in 2006 to critical acclaim. The Wire magazine named it their album of the year, along with achieving fifth place in the Mixmag 2006 Album of the Year list, and eighteenth in the best of the year list of The Observer music monthly supplement. His follow-up, Untrue, was released in 2007 and was a nominee for a coveted 2008 Mercury Music Prize. Keeping his identity out of the spotlight (it was speculated he might be Aphex Twin or Fat Boy Slim), little is known about Burial except (in his own words) he is, “a low key person [who] just wants to make some tunes, nothing else.”

Composed of Benjamin Curtis (The Secret Machines) with sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza (On-Air Library!), The School of Seven Bells was formed in 2004 while the members were on tour together. The group takes its name from a mythical South American pickpocket academy that may or may not have existed in the ’80s. School of Seven Bells’ music is full of tensions-Curtis’ gentle guitars wrap around jagged beats; silky vocals hide behind grumpy, alien synthesizers-but the resulting songs are effortlessly cohesive, and insidiously catchy.

Beirut was initially the solo musical project of 22-year-old Santa Fe native Zach Condon, which later evolved into a band led by Condon. Their 2006 debut album, Gulag Orkestar, combines elements of Eastern European music and folk with Western pop. Beirut’s second album, The Flying Club Cup, was recorded largely at a makeshift studio in Albuquerque and completed at Arcade Fire’s studio in Quebec. The music on the album has a French influence due to Condon’s interest in French chanson during its recording. Condon plays the trumpet and the ukulele as his main instruments, having been unable to play guitar because of a wrist injury that prevented his hand from reaching fully around the neck of a guitar. In 2008, Condon canceled Beirut’s planned European Tour and took time off to re-evaluate his music and the direction of the band, much to many fan’s bewilderment and sorrow. Beirut has triumphantly returned in 2009 with the release of a double-ep March of the Zapotec, based on Condon’s recent trip to Oaxaca, Mexico, and Holland, under the name of his former musical project, Realpeople.
