Release Date: 9.20.11

The trail discovered by 2008′s Bury The Square, blazed by 2009′s Gather, Form & Fly, and tended by 2010′s Heretofore has run into a wide and rushing river. The band we know as Megafaun, born alongside Bon Iver in the ashes that rose from DeYarmond Edison (Brad Cook, Joe Westerlund, and Phil Cook’s former band with Justin Vernon), has woven years of writing, touring, and living into a new sonic language. Critically-praised and publicly loved for their ability to speak in the many tongues of American musical history, all while blending it with their own energetic and personal form of Rock, Megafaun has staked a claim. But the lay of that land they call theirs -the hills, valleys, and caves beneath is just revealing itself in the sunrise. This is the band we know, but in a new light. This is Megafaun. Check out the single and the new exclusive video after the jump!

Brooklyn based rockers Bear In Heaven have had quite a run over the last 10 months since the original release of their highly praised LP Beast Rest Forth Mouth. From a Pitchfork Best New Music accolade, to a non-stop Europe and US tour schedule and a busy SXSW week including the IODA Opening Day Bash, these guys have vaulted onto the scene. Their newest effort, Beast Rest Forth Mouth, is sure to add to their momentum and secure their place in the indie community.

The Story of Bear In Heaven from Hometapes’ website: “Bear in Heaven started out as Jon Philpot, alone, in a studio, after hours, in Atlanta Georgia. Then he moved to New York and it was him, all alone, in his room, unemployed, trying to figure out how to make music in his bedroom and get a job. Then comes along James Elliott, a friend of friends from Table of the Elements. They became friends, drank many drinks and went to Europe with Presocratics. James started The Social Registry with Rich Zerbo, left TSR and made music under the name Ateleia. Around that same time, Sadek Bazarra moved to New York with his company GHAVA. Jon and Sadek hung out, talked about girls, art and music. Adam Wills was soon to follow. Jon and Adam worked together at the studio in Atlanta. The first day Adam was in NYC he knew more people than Jon did in a year. Soon all the friends came together and Jon finished some songs. Old friend Scott Herren released “Tunes Nextdoor to Songs” A short album. Some call it an EP. Excitement was in the air and they started playing the songs. Sort of. At that time, the group consisted of everyone minus Joe Stickney, plus guitarist David Daniell. Joe was an old friend of Adam. He played drums with Paul Duncan and liked Jon’s drum kit. Joe jumped in, David jumped out, they started writing songs and now I present to you Bear in Heaven.”

This quote from their website gives us a glimpse in to what Hometapes really stands for:

“Hearing and making music, taking pictures, writing something down, designing a page or a package, watching through windows, driving, walking, talking: these are the modest pillars of Hometapes. We engineer products that represent us, our friends/collaborators, and creative everyday life. Sometimes they exceed our expectations and we surely hope they excite yours. Hometapes = music, art, and everything else.” -home-tapes.com

2009 was Hometapes most successful year to date with releases from Bear In Heaven, Megafaun, Slaraffenland and others and 2010 looks to be even better. Recently featured by Billboard in their article “Class of 2010: Keep an Eye Out For These Up-And-Coming Indie Labels,” it’s clear Hometapes is poised and ready to take it to the next level. We look forward to seeing what they have coming up. Whatever it is we know it will be beautifully presented and true to it’s form.

Billboard Class of 2010 IAMSOUND 1024x638 Hometapes leads the Class of 2010 in Billboard

Congratulations to Portland, Oregon based Hometapes for being featured in next week’s Billboard article, “Class of 2010: Keep an Eye Out For These Up-And-Coming Indie Labels”.

From the article:

“In these digital days, it takes a brave little label to put so much time and energy into physical package design.  But for Hometapes founder Sara Padgett Heathcott, what’s on the outside of an album is as much a part of the overall experience as the music itself.  ‘It’s another level of art-making,’ says Heathcott, who’s based in Portland, Ore.  ‘I want people to experience the music beyond the sound.’  Releases in 2009 included the CD and double LP “Gather, Form & Fly” by Megafaun.”

Title: Water For Mars
Label: Hometapes
Genre: Hip-Hop : Indie
Release Date: 8/11/09
UPC: 718122112821
Territory: Americas, Europe, Australia, Africa

CYNE (pronounced “sign”) is a Hip Hop quartet out of Gainsville, FL and stands for Cultivating Your New Experience. Comprised of emcees Akin (Akin Yai) and Cise Star (Clyde Graham) and backed by producers Speck (Michael Gersten)  and Enoch (David Newell) CYNE is a four man indie hip hop powerhouse. Formed in 2001 in the swamps of Gainsville, CYNE put out a number of releases on various smaller labels until landing on Hometapes for last year’s release of their critically acclaimed LP Pretty Dark Things. Now with their second release on Hometapes in as many years CYNE is here to stay. With an initial release in Japan back on May 2nd (P-Vine Records) Water For Mars has already been receiving rave reviews from the blogosphere and is on many indie hip hop best of 2009 lists.

Seven years after their formation CYNE has honed their collective talents and is clearly at the top of their game. The delicate balance between accessible and too mainstream is something many indie hip hop groups struggle with. On Water For Mars it’s clear CYNE has mastered that balance while remaining true to themselves and most importantly their music. Speck and Enoch’s beats bump with classic samples, thick synths and deep drum sounds. Akin and Cise Star’s lyrics are poignant and gritty, rooted firmly in the present with a old school hip hop aesthetic.

At 21 tracks including a revisiting of “Elephant Rome” feat. Daedalus (originally released on Pretty Dark Things) and a remix of “Sleep” by Mexicans With Guns, Water For Mars is a true hip hop journey. In many ways CYNE is following in the footsteps of their most influential predecessors. Perfecting hip hop’s ability to tackle racial and political issues while remaining true to the music that started at street parties in Harlem. As their Hometapes page points out:

“Their often politically-charged, culturally-introspective, and motivational lyrics find influence rooted in the early works of Nas, Public Enemy, Outkast and Common Sense. The production could be described as warm, soulful and organic — born out of the school of producers that cite the likes of RZA, Pete Rock, Jay Dee, and DJ Premier. CYNE’s ‘sound’ is impacted by everything from Bad Brains to Krautrock, from Camp Lo to Kate Bush, from Venezuelan Gaita to West African Highlife — it’s a hybrid of emotional, historical, and challenging influences.”
