Always generous and open with their music, Canada’s indie all-stars Broken Social Scene have allowed their new album, Forgiveness Rock Record, to be posted on NPR Music for pre-release streaming! You can take a listen to the album in its entirety, or just check out an individual track that fancies you. Forgiveness Rock Record will stream in its entirety until its release on May 4. There’s a mighty fine review of the record on that site as well.

SXSW 2010 Stand-Outs

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

It’s been just over a week since SXSW 2010 kicked off and we’re all still trying to digest the dozens of bands we were lucky enough to check out in Texas.  We asked for submissions from IODAns that made it down to see the madness and here is our list of stand-outs in no particular order (with as many free PromoTracks we could scramble up!):

What we say: Awesome, dirt encrusted, fun loving, soul from Milwaukee  Like a beautiful, dusty 1970s 7” found in a  Midwest yard sale.  Makes Sharon Jones seem like a Vegas revue. – Erik Gilbert

What the critics say: “With a string of prized 45s and an upcoming debut on Luaka Bop, Milwaukee’s Kings Go Forth set their songs in that fleeting moment when soul transmogrified into disco, emphasizing tight percussion, lyrics that address heartache with dignity and composure, and stirring harmonies that draw from the Blue Notes, the Pips, the Impressions, and a thousand regional acts lost to time.” – Pitchfork

Full length , “The Outsiders are Back” out April 13,2010.

SXSW 2010 Stand OutsWhat we say: Saw them at the IODA party and spent the rest of SXSW planning my schedule around when I could see them next, whether it was just Zeus or Zeus as Jason Collett’s backing band. A great rock act in the vein of Spoon or Wilco, Zeus has three vocalists who alternate lead singer, guitarist, bassist and pianist roles- they kept us guessing and delightfully entertained. Their album “Say Us” on Arts & Crafts is solid, but to properly enjoy Zeus you need to see them live.

SXSW 2010 Stand OutsWhat we say: Another adventure away from 6th street that I really enjoyed was getting to check out the Texas Tornadoes, an all-start tex-mex supergroup.  Highlights include “She’s About A Mover,” (originally by Texas Tornadoes singer’s father Doug Sahm) which when I was younger remembered as being “She’s a Body Mover.” Members include the legendary keyboard player Augie Meyers of the Sir Douglas Quintet the & Freddy Fender.

 SXSW 2010 Stand Outs

What we say:  What was a San Francisco native doing at the Bay Area Takeover in Austin? Can’t I see these bands anytime back home? Yes; but I’d just become enraptured with this synth pop trio.  They make soaring pop melodies that sound so fresh and far from overwrought. Lead singer Mike Deni’s vocals are impeccable live.  This is the kind of band you just really want to make it. – Jillian

What the critics say: “Tailor-made for your own personal late-night dance party.” -Spin Magazine

SXSW 2010 Stand OutsWhat we say: The IODA SXSW party was my first time seeing Sleepy Sun live, and boy did they bring the goods.  They had me at hello, but what absolutely sold me was their totally slamming closing cover of “No Sugar Tonight” by the immortal Guess Who.  Such an awesome, unexpected way to ring out a great day of great music.  The entire crowd was smiling and totally appreciative — especially this guy. Thanks guys! – Matt (Seconded by Adam)

What the critics say: “While much of Embrace draws on the alchemic power of the jam, most notably the billowing white-noise eruption of ‘White Dove,’ it’s a keen grasp of songwriting nuance that differentiates them from the legions of neo-psych charlatans.” – Under The Radar

The New York Times Hearts IODA Artists at SXSW!

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

The New York Times’ Art Beat section recently reviewed a series of performances at this year’s SXSW festival in Austin, and it seems our beloved IODA artists made quite an impression on them! Here’s a list of some of the artists and what Art Beat had to say about their performances (some of the quotes come from a feature they do called the “four word review;” it’s easy to guess which ones):

Frightened Rabbit: “Frightened Rabbit–singular noun, full band–devotes itself to hangdog anthems. Its stage patter was so unassuming that the band’s lead singer, Scott Hutchison, insisted the group had been outplayed by an opening act, We Were Promised Jetpacks. But the music contradicted that humility.” – Jon Pareles

Hauschka: “Hauschka … builds his repeating structures with a Romantic ear — pensive minor chords, inviting melodic lines, slow-cresting dynamics — and, sometimes, a foundation of rock rhythm. Even with their echoes of Philip Glass, the pieces were ingenious and exquisite.” – Jon Pareles

Still Life Still: “…just when we were about to get back to work, Still Life Still kicked in. The band’s set was full of time shifts, sudden vocals and minor chords, but managed to make obtuse angles fit together almost sweetly. We stayed. The world and its petty needs would have to wait.” – David Carr

Broken Social Scene: “… Emily Haines of Metric wandered onstage in a gray hoodie, along with her bandmate James Shaw, to knock down a version of “Anthems for a 17 Year Old Girl.” Oddly enough, the addition of yet even more people seemed to solve the math and steady the presentation. By the end, people were even dancing.” – David Carr

Thee Oh Sees: “Thee Oh Sees have the propulsion of punk and the whirl of psychedelia, and the foursome … drew a few hundred people. A few hundred very enthusiastic people … the vibe was far more chummy than polished. The group performed in a tight knot with the audience clustered inches around it. There was a mosh pit and even some crowd-surfing. At times the dancing was so hard the bridge shook.” – Melena Ryzik

Real Estate: “Rollin’ downriver, beery haze.” – Ben Sisario

Warpaint: “They start out airborne, with high rippling chords and pinging patterns; soon one of the women starts singing a line or two that becomes an incantation, usually about a tense relationship: “All the time it took you to get yourself straight,” one chides. And then the drums kick in, the bass dives down and Warpaint turns downright funky while the guitars still float. First they hypnotize; then they get you dancing.” – Jon Pareles

With the release of their new LP, Ashes Grammar, Philadelphia’s ambient pop outfit, A Sunny Day In Glasgow, continued to dazzle and amaze with new material and exploration into uncharted musical grounds while consistently providing their fans with the dreamy, ethereal comfort their highly loved previous material was heralded for. The recording sessions for the new record stretched across 6 months and were fraught with all kinds of disaster, but in the end, they were also incredibly productive. After the album’s completion, a good number of extra songs were put on the shelf for a while as the core trio of Ben Daniels, Annie Fredrickson and Josh Meakim reclaimed their lives.

“Nitetime Rainbows” always struck the band as a song that could be its own album, let alone EP/single. Sunny Day has decided to do just that, releasing the Nitetime Rainbows EP on Mis Ojos Discos, a blooming of side thoughts from their latest full length. The title track was one of the most fun songs to record on Ashes Grammar, and it has the most elaborate and strange instruments on it — from vibes to lap steel to bulbul tarang.  Its partner song, “Daytime rainbows,” was originally intended to appear on the full length but the band needed a bit more time to develop it. “So bloody, so tight” is one of the band’s absolute favorite songs they’ve recorded to date and it’s easy to hear why. The song is full of hope in a way the band has only hinted at previously. While the vocals are still low in the mix, the lyrics for this song are the first the band has ever shared. “Piano lessons” was the result of Ben, who cannot play the piano, sitting at the baby grand for many, many hours one night. By the end of the night he was deliriously pounding the keys, mashing as many as he could with his palms flat. The experience made him wish he hadn’t given up piano lessons when he was 12 and it also revealed some beautiful noise in the banging. The EP also features three remixes by label friends Benoît Pioulard, Ezekiel Honig and The Buddy System – each offering wholly unique interpretations of the title song. Artwork for the EP was contributed by Finnish artist Jaakko Mattila, whose artwork previously appeared on the CD and LP versions of Ashes Grammar.

Nitetime Rainbows features of some of their brightest sounding songs to date. These are the sounds of a band falling in love, a band having fun.
