Title: Imidiwan: Companions
Label: World Village

Release Date: 8/25/2009

Territory: Puerto Rico, United States Virgin Islands, United States of America

After garnering a mountain of positive press and touring worldwide to previously unachieved exposure, one might expect Tinariwen’s music to lose some of the charm and authenticity their nomadic African background provides them; this is definitely not the case. The legendary poet guitarists and soul rebels from the southern Sahara desert have produced a unique blend of guitar-headed, blues oriented roots rock and traditional African instrumentation that has harbored praise from greats like Robert Plant, Santana, Brian Eno, TV on the Radio, Bono and Thom Yorke as well as prestigious awards such as BBC Award for World Music in 2005 and the prestigious Praetorius Music Prize in Germany in 2008. Their new record: Imidiwan (“Companions”) possesses all the elements that have made them so magnetic to western ears: raw simplicity, melodic beauty, songs ranging from the epic and universal to the intimate and personal, and a definite and evident authenticity to their music.

Icons of freedom and resistance among their own people, the nomadic Touareg of the Sahara, the group was founded at the end of the 1970s, during a period of great suffering in the desert, due to the catastrophic droughts of the early 1970s that decimated the animal herds and almost destroyed the Touareg’s ancient nomadic way of life. Tinariwen began to write songs describing the pain of exile, the longing for lost homes and families, the struggle for political and cultural freedom, and the rigors of everyday life in the desert. Transposing the traditional melodies of the Touareg on the electric guitar then mixing them with blues, rock, pop, Berber and Arabic influences, Tinariwen created a modern desert rock sound. In the early 1980s, the were  lured into rebel training camps in Libya by Colonel Gadaffi, becoming the official mouthpiece of the Touareg rebellion in northern Mali and Niger, which all the founding members of the group took part in. After years of struggle and violence Tinariwen decided to lay down their guns and fight with a different weapon – music.

Part of what helps keep their sound constant and authentic is the recording process: their new album was recorded in the Malian village of Tessalit (the home of band members Ibrahim Ag Alhabib and Hassan Ag Touhami), out in the African bush, in nomad camps, and other assorted magical locations, all of which aided the group in pulling out what truly makes them unique in sound. To accent their unique recording program, Tinariwen’s fourth record also reunites the group with producer Jean-Paul Romann for the first time since their 2001 debut record, The Radio Tisdas Sessions. Expect to find more original guitar parts unlike anything you’ve heard on a western recording, easy going tempos that carry you gently as they sing tales of strife and glory, and genuine African percussion and accenting instrumentation.

In a world where most music feels like a re-hashing of something that came before, Tinariwen stands as a prideful and meaningful example of authenticity and skill.

Tinariwen featured in Music of Resistance Documentary

Friday, February 13th, 2009

A new 26 min documentary on Tinariwen has been broadcast by Al Jazeera English as part of their ‘Music Of Resistance’ series.   The program was filmed on location in the southern Sahara desert and in the UK.   It was directed by Jason Breckenridge and presented by Steve ‘Chandrasonic’ from Asian Dub Foundation. This is a visually stunning and musically uplifting piece that shows Tinariwen’s point of view on their music and it’s purpose in their struggle for peace.

From AlJazeera English:

“The nomadic Touareg tribes have endured years of drought and civil war. The one constant through this hardship has been the music of Tinariwen.

Once a group of rebel soldiers, training alongside Colonel Gadaffi in Libya, after years of struggle and violence Tinariwen decided to lay down their guns and fight with a different weapon – music.”
