Willie and the Wheel and The Krayolas- NPR Says to Lose the Ego and Listen to Them!

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Planning your New Years resolutions?  Maybe one should be to not judge music by it’s hipster cred alone.  NPR affiliate station, KUT, posted a list of 10 albums out in 2009 that they think are worthy of your ear’s precious time even if it won’t add an edge to your record collection.

The collaboration between Asleep at the Wheel and Willie Nelson made it on the list: “This is no retro kitsch. For more than 30 years, it was the dream of producer Jerry Wexler to have Willie Nelson cover the masterworks of Western swing, backed by Ray Benson and his gang of modern swingmasters in Asleep at the Wheel. Wexler lived just long enough to see this happen: a collection that defines the best of the genre.  An instant classic, 30 years in the making.”

Also, reunited San Antonio band, The Krayolas, make an appearance on the list:

“It’s hard to say exactly what someone would expect from a San Antonio band in the disco-drenched early ’80s, but “guys in suits and matching Rickenbacker guitars” was probably not high on the list. The Krayolas excelled in power-pop, but then called it quits. It must have surprised even the band that its 2008 comeback album La Conquistadora would gain critical raves and national attention on Dave Marsh’s Sirius show. But Long Leaf Pine (No Smack Gum) is even better. The writing is crisp, and the sound is powerful and locked-in, effortlessly mixing Tex-Mex, Motown and British Invasion sounds into a winning concoction.”

Billboard Top 200- 3 IODA Artists Make Impressive Appearances

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Willie Nelson with Asleep at the Wheel and Melinda Doolittle both made very impressive first week appearances on Billboard charts.  Melinda hit the ground running with 58 on the Top 200; Willie and the Wheel made it in at 90.  Alison Krauss and Robert Plant reentered the charts at 69 after their 5 Grammy wins, including Album and Record of the Year.

Melinda doolittle2 l Billboard Top 200 3 IODA Artists Make Impressive AppearancesVia Billboard:

“DOOLITTLE DOES A LOT:  Sixth season “American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks has had a successful chart career since her May 2007 victory. Runner-up Blake Lewis made some chart appearances as well but many fans of the series have been waiting for third-place finalist to have her day in the sun. That day has come, as Melinda Doolittle debuts at No. 58 on The Billboard 200 with her first album, “Coming Back to You” (Hi Fi).

On Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, the release is new at No. 39. The album is doing even better on Top Independent Albums, where it opens at No. 3, and Top Internet Albums, where it bows at No. 13.”

Willie and the Wheel came in at #7 on the Top Independent Albums chart, just slightly behind Miss Doolittle.

This was a big week for independent musicians!

Review: Willie and the Wheel

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

featured release big Review: Willie and the Wheel

249427 72 Review: Willie and the Wheel

Artist: Willie Nelson, Asleep at the Wheel
Title: Willie and the Wheel
Label: Bismeaux Records
Release Date: 2.3.09
UPC: 0020286128724
Genres: Americana: Swing
Territories: World

By: Michael Madavi

These days, Willie Nelson’s name has become synonymous with many things: outlaw country, Texas, marijuana, and political avocation. Over the last handful of decades, Nelson has made such a serious contribution to music that an attempt to encompass all his achievements would prove futile. The pony-tailed grey wonder has played almost every genre of music (even working with Snoop Dog in Amsterdam this past year) and made a massive contribution to the popularization and preservation of country music; his name is instantly recognizable (bonus fact: he also has a black belt in martial arts!).

Asleep at the Wheel, a name that might not catch the average reader’s eye as easily as Willie’s, are a group of musicians who have single-handedly kept the timeless and spirited genre of swing-country alive for the past 30 years. Anyone with a proper knowledge of country music’s last few decades would enthusiastically praise this six-piece’s talent, and that’s before mentioning their nine (nine!!) Grammy Awards. Comprised of some of country’s finest musicians, The Wheel have built themselves a legacy of fantastic work and continue to impress.

Willie and The Wheel is the new, wonderfully nostalgic collaboration between these two country giants. Nelson, who’s tried a myriad of different styles over the years, returns to some of his roots, playing a classic collection of old favorites from the swing-country catalogue like “Hesitation Blues” and Bobby Darin’s “I Ain’t Gonna Give Nobody None.” The songs were handpicked by legendary country producer, the late Jerry Wexler who came up with the idea for the record while Willie was signed to Atlantic Records, but couldn’t complete the project since Nelson changed labels. Overall, the album makes for an old fashioned good time, joyful and fun while remaining musically impressive. Be sure to catch Willie and The Wheel on the following dates:
